Off campus housing for orientation

Any suggestions on places to stay for orientation if on-campus housing accomodations are filled up? Specifically, from June 13 - 16.

You might try the off-campus dorms - Castilian, Dobie, and University Towers. I don't know whether they accept short-term summer residents but I would check. Also call the UT orientation office and ask if they know of any off-campus housing. The UT Orientation website, including contact telephone numbers, is here: <a href="http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/nss/conf_fresh.php%5B/url%5D">http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/nss/conf_fresh.php</a>. Finally, you may have to look into motels. There are several extended stay motels in Austin, although they are far from the campus. The nearest hotels where you can walk to campus are the Doubletree University (east campus, at IH 35 and MLK) and the Mansion at Judge's Hill (west campus), but both are expensive.

Have you checked to see if campus housing is available? Orientation students stay in Jester and I suspect they have plenty of rooms available.

does anyone have any suggestions for housing for international students one week prior to residence halls opening, for orientation?
thanks!

"Have you checked to see if campus housing is available?"

On campus housing for the June 13-16 orientation session would be ideal but there are all booked up.

When my daughter tries to sign up for housing, she gets the following msg, "No housing space is available for the session you selected. You may still register for this session, but must make your own housing accommodations at an off campus location."

I called the New Student Services office @512-471-3304 and they emailed me a list of hotels. They also said that she could get on a waiting list on check-in day but that she should have a hotel reservation as a backup.

You are right about the hotels being expensive. The UT rate for the Doubletree near Jester is $99/night.

m1817,

Check with Hardin House. They have summer housing (I think they call it the Quarters) that they rent during the summer. I think it is only for girls so I didn't mention it earlier, but it would be a very good place for your daughter to stay if you can get her in.

I know this doesn't relate to the question, but I booked a flight during my orientation during the 11th-14th of July and I was wondering if it would be better to take a taxi or bus from the airport to Jester? How long does the bus take and how far in general is the airport from the university? (Sorry everytime I previously went there I went by car).

Hi Grandpabuzz,

I think you have several choices for airport transportation:
(I've listed them with the least expensive transportion first and the most expensive last.)

Bus service - The Capital Metro, which also runs the UT shuttle, provides extensive service in Austin. I think the Airport Flyer/Airport 100 would be your best bet (website here: <a href="http://www.capmetro.org/riding/schedules.asp?f1=100%5B/url%5D">http://www.capmetro.org/riding/schedules.asp?f1=100</a> but browse around since there might be a better route). I"m not sure what the fare is but I think it's cheap (fare website here: <a href="http://www.capmetro.org/riding/fares_2.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.capmetro.org/riding/fares_2.asp</a>) and if you get your UT id at orientation, I think you ride free on the return trip to the airport.

Super Shuttle - The shuttle will take you to Jester for around $14 plus tip. The website is here: <a href="http://www.supershuttle.com/htm/cities/aus.htm#Sample%5B/url%5D">http://www.supershuttle.com/htm/cities/aus.htm#Sample</a>. I think you have to make reservations in advance but you can do that online or by phone.

Taxi - You can always take a taxi from the airport. As I recall, a taxi to the campus area costs $20-$25 plus tip.

If you are feeling rich, hire a limo for your airport transfer. I like Longhorn Limo. It costs $72.50 one-way (which includes tip, but I add $5-$10).

Thanks man that was incredibly helpful; you own!!
