Off Campus Housing in Oakland Area

Does anyone have any apartment recommendations in the Oakland area for a fall 2011 transfer student? Seeking something close to campus, in a safe area, and on a bus line.

What specifically are you looking for? Are you a current student?

I will be a transferring for the fall 2011 semester and heard that students begin to apply for housing the second week in January.

This is a pretty good list. Even though the link says “graduate students,” most of the apartments are open to all. For safe neighborhoods that are convenient and popular with Pitt and CMU students, I would recommend North Oakland and Shadyside. As far as landlords, Meyers Management is pretty good, and Lobos less so. PM me if you want any more info, and I will be more specific.

Has anyone rented apartments at the following: Bates Hill 3812 Bates St. or Oakland Bates Apts. 403 Oakland Ave. They are located in South Oakland and I was wondering if anyone had experienced/or known someone that rented in these buildings. Obviously looking at the security/safety and any maintenance issues.

I’m hoping to find a studio really close to campus that’ll allow my cat and cost less than $700/month… recommendations?

Thank for this list, LurkNess.

Thanks for the link and property management information. This is very helpful.

Do you know if transfer students can apply for University-owned housing for the fall?

Also, as an incoming sophomore, I would guess that my chances for getting on campus housing is pretty small. Do you have any idea how many transfer students get on campus housing?

ljb, sorry I can’t answer your questions. University-owned housing is hard to get, but if you’re fast on the draw, maybe you’ll be lucky. According to the Panther Central page, you have to apply on the second Monday of January. That’s coming up! Here’s the page. I don’t see a clickable link, though. You have to be fast, because I think the process was over in one day last year, though. That’s how strong demand is. My daughter missed out.

In general, I would advise you to be flexible, apply for everything, and keep your fingers crossed. Things change from year to year. For instance, this past year, Pitt started putting kids up in a local hotel. It turns out that the students were really happy to be there, because they had all missed the housing deadline. It was nice that Pitt accommodated them anyway. To my knowledge, that was the first year that Pitt did that. So you never can tell. Also, some kids sign up for housing, then their plans change at the last minute. So there may be openings that you don’t expect.

According to my daughter, some of the university-owned apartments are quite far from campus. We talked quite a bit about housing over break, and she does not want to live in the university apartments next year. She also will not live in South Oakland.

As a transfer student, ljb, you might want to search out someone needing a roommate. It is a bit of a risk since you will not know him/her, but a dorm roommate would also be a new.

matok, check out Aberdeen Apartments on Bayard Street in North Oakland. If you have questions, feel free to pm me.

Thanks MD Mom. I’ve heard that South Oakland is sketchy and am thinking mostly about North Oakland. Do you know of any apartment buildings that are close to campus?

divel made a very good suggestion.

Another nice building is Schenley House on North Craig Street, in North Oakland. But it’s not particularly cheap. My daughter looked at an apartment there and really liked it, but the garage fee was too high, her roommate felt. So they ended up moving to a neighborhood a bit farther away. But here’s the link if you’re interested. The apartments are large, and the one bedrooms can house two people easily, if you don’t mind giving up some privacy.

In general, wherever you rent, another thing to watch is whether utilities are included or not. If you’re asked to pay for heat and hot water, that can add up.
