Off campus housing in Philly

Hello y’all. I am probably going to apply to Penn for gradschool and I would definitely need to find an apartment. Does anyone have experience with living off-campus? How are the housing options near the school? Are there other neighborhoods you would reccomend that are an easy transit commute to campus? Let me know yoru experience. I live off campus where I currently go to school, but Pittsburgh is nothing like Philly! Any thoughts appreciated.

The housing options are very variable - you can find pretty much anything you could want within walking/biking distance of campus from luxury apartments to cockroach infested dumps, with prices to match. If you're really determined, you can find somewhere for under $200 a month, but it won't be pretty. Prices generally go down as you get further from campus too.
I've been living off campus for three years and I've had generally OK experiences, but I've always gone the shared house route and not rented an apartment.

If you're going to be there for grad school I would definitely live in Center City. There are great neighborhoods in the city and they are all a quick commute to campus. Pricier areas are Rittenhouse Square, Old City, Society Hill, and Washington Square. But you can find great apartments in areas like Bella Vista, Queen Village, and Washington Square West. You can also look at areas like Northern Liberties, which is being redeveloped.

I'd recommend going to www.phillyweekly.com and www.craigslist.com.

Philly is definitely not Pittsburgh :)

I'll keep in mind staying near to campus if I do end up there for grad school. Thanks
