Off-campus housing; neighborhoods

Do you have any recommendations on apartment complexes in Cambridge near campus, or in a nice region adjacent to Cambridge, that have studios in the $1000-$1200 region?

I'm curious of your views on the different neighborhoods adjacent to Cambridge? I'd like to live somewhere within 1-2 miles of campus and where it is very friendly, safe to be outside, low car traffic, near parks, near a food cooperative, health conscious people, etc.

Check All Access Housing ([Boston Apartment Search | Boston Apartment Rental | Apartments for Rent Boston](http://www.allaccessboston.com/boston-apartments-for-rent)) or Craigslist.

There are a lot of neighborhoods in and around Cambridge that are near parks and food coops, and where there are health-conscious people. (They don’t call it the People’s Republic of Cambridge for nothing, after all.)

But there isn’t really anywhere within 1-2 miles of campus that has low car traffic. Harvard is in the middle of a major metropolitan area. Even the residential neighborhoods of Cambridge are rather busy.

For the most part, apartments in complexes are going to be more expensive than those located in houses and other buildings. You can check out [Harvard Real Estate Services](http://www.huhousing.harvard.edu/ProspectiveResidents/index.aspx) to see Harvard-owned apartment complexes, but they’re not cheap – a studio in the major Cambridge building, 10 Akron Street, starts at $1440/month.

The cheapest way to live in Cambridge/Somerville is to get an apartment in a house with roommates. Many of these houses are in nice neighborhoods with easy access to public transportation, and each roommate gets his/her own bedroom.
