Off campus housing options

Hi all, I've accepted an offer to join UMD's graduate program this Fall, and was wondering if you guys could give me pointers about good housing options. The only university-affiliated housing option, Graduate Hills & Graduate Gardens, is run by Southern Management, and if you look at any reviews site, you'll be hard-pressed to find a single good review of that place.

I'm looking for a well-maintained, somewhat quiet (I don't want to be hearing every step that my neighbor makes, for example), and safe housing option. Where can I find housing like that in College Park? Unfortunately, I won't have a car, at least in my first semester.

Thanks.

For future reference, you can always check freestuff.umd.edu for events happening on campus… it so happens there is a workshop today and tomorrow for grad students about tenant rights, but even more timely for you is next Tues, April 23 is an off-campus housing fair so you can see all the options in one fell-swoop…sorry this is long…I cut and pasted the info

Hi maryversity, thanks for this. I will definitely check similar events like these when I arrive in the Fall. I’m not living in MD, yet - I actually live overseas, but will be in on campus in mid-August.

I heard that off-campus housing fills up quickly. But it’s difficult to scout for good housing from afar, so I tried online review sites and found what is said there of MANY places somewhat alarming, so much that off-campus seems to be a bad option anywhere. Now all I’m looking for is a clean, quiet place near campus, and which is safe. Some people have suggested Silver Spring, but I don’t drive, and so I’m wondering if you also think public transportation is safe and reliable enough to be used on a daily basis.

If you are a resident or are close to the area, I would appreciate even general advice for everything housing-related.

Sorry…I’m out of state…hopefully someone local will see this thread and be able to help

The Metro is quite reliable, especially the areas in and around DC (including UMD) and with your student ID, it would also be quite cheap. UMD also has a shuttle bus system for its students, but I don’t know where the stops are.

Most grad students live in the Maaza Grand Marc which used to have a shuttle to campus. I am not sure if they’ll still have the route next year, but it’s not too far from campus.

Other near-campus options are
The View
The View 2
The Varsity
Parkside at College Park Apartments
And there’s a lot down University Avenue near the metro, but as individual houses or individual apartments.
