I’ve been considering renting and moving into a small house or apartment for a few months now after this semester. However, the one thing that is keeping me from making a solid decision is that I don’t plan to live in my rental property during the summers between academic years so I can work near my parents’ house. I understand that most standard leases are 12 months.
I know subletting (sub-leasing) is an option, but my campus is in a rural area and the student life is pretty much non-existent, so people pretty much go home after schooling. Plus, I reckoned it’ll be hard to find someone to sub-lease for just 3 months in the summer.
Should I just take the hit every summer and throw away 3 months of rent OR should I just stay on-campus housing which has a higher monthly rent rate, but the lease is only during the academic school year (not summer)?
