My son will be a Junior in the Fall 2013.He is ready to move off campus. I have concerns he won't get a dorm room on-campus since W&M does not guarantee housing for all 4 years. My question: should he go ahead and apply for dorm space and worry about it later if he doesn't get in? I saw on the W&M website that there is an "Off Campus Housing Fair" in March, but that seems a little late to me. We are OOS, so an unfurnished house is problematic. Do furnished apts/houses exist around the campus? Any insight will be appreciated.

Yes.

[The College of William & Mary | Off Campus Housing Search](http://www.wmoffcampus.com/)

From the wm home page, your student can log in and link to WM off campus housing page on the web. There you will find ads for roommates, shared housing, sublets, and other rentals. Some places are furnished, some not. Keep checking this site and have your student make appointments to go preview possibilities in advance. You may have to sign a lease for a number of months, a full semester, a full year, or for part of the Summer in addition to Fall to get a specific place. Some people lease for a whole year, then sublet for the summer…there is demand.

There’s no real downside to entering the housing lottery (due in early Feb.). While housing isn’t guaranteed for all four years it can also very much be the case that students get housing all four years. He can of course explore off-campus housing options in the meantime but again, there’s no harm in trying for on-campus housing if he’s interested.
