Off Campus Housing

Hey, what are some good places to live off campus that aren’t too far from campus? I am transferring into OSU for the fall '13 and I will be a junior. I was looking at University Village and that looked really nice. I would prefer to live in Apartments or duplexes. Does anyone know of any good off campus housing options?

Unfortunately, housing tends to go quickly in the best locations, and the majority of leases are signed by now. University Village is certainly an option, but I think living there is pretty expensive compared to more traditional off campus housing. You may want to call up some of the larger rental companies that have apartments and duplexes near campus, and ask them what they have available. I rent from Oxford, and have been very happy with them for the past several years. They have an office on 16th and Pearl, and their website is here:

You should also check out these reddit threads, in which current or recently graduated OSU students discuss their experiences with different rental companies, and give advice:

I recommend you call up several of the better-ranked agencies and ask them what is left for next fall, and drive to Columbus to get a tour of the places you are considering.

To keep rent prices in perspective, you can find housing for around $300-$600 a person per month, depending on how close you are to campus and how nice the place is. Usually utilities are not included, so keep in mind that you may owe an additional $60-$150 a month in gas, electric, water, cable, and internet.

You need to contact OSU’s Off-Campus Student Services. They are a fantastic group of people! You can look them up through facebook. When my son lost a room mate during the summer months he attended one of their room mate fairs. It was very well organized and they were able to find a replacement room mate. It was set up so those who were looking for a place to live had a name tag of a certain color and if you had a room you had a different color. It was sorta like speed dating. The office also offers an an online directory for both students in need of a room and those with an extra room. They also will have a list of reputable renting agencies. It is well organized and so supported of those living off campus. They also can give you a better idea for the personalities of the different neighborhoods. My son lives in a big old house near the frat houses. It’s loud and busy, but fun. (A little too much if you ask this parent.) BTW, it seems most leases run from Aug (or mid Aug) through the end of July. Just something to keep in mind.
