Hi, looking to go to a UCI or UCSD. I am qualified to get Financial Aid to cover my tuition and fees.
My ERC is 0, meaning I get full benefits.
If I am going to be living off-campus, will FAFSA help me pay for it? How much if so? Anyone a student who lives on-campus of off-campus, how much does FAFSA give for housing?

If I get a loan, how much will they provide me? What are the terms?
Sorry for so many questions, I am just confused. Thanks ahead of time. Looking for some answers.

The school should have different CoA for commute, on campus, and off campus housing students. If the school does meet the need, you should be able to find the cost accordingly.

If you get accepted to a UC and you have an EFC of zero you will get generous aid that will allow you to attend and dorm. The most you will have to pay is usually 9k a year and it might be much less. Apply widely and see, some campuses might give you extra university grants.

The 9k will be made up of a student loan of about 5k and work/study job during the year of about 2k, and expected summer earnings of about 2k.

The student loan is under very generous rate and terms, the best you will get anywhere so take it. You can read about the details on the Fed loan pages.

Now with regard to different living expenses. You tell them if you are living on campus, off campus or at home. You will get different amounts of aid to cover these different COA situations. Like so:

Is there some reason you want to start off living off campus?

@BrownParent I don’t know anything about the dorms or transfer apartments.
No info at all, meaning are they clean? Who do I have to live with? How are the bathrooms and stuff. If anyone has info on them let me know, will be very useful.
The reason I am choosing off-campus because I don’t want to live in the same room with a person I don’t know. Do they provide private bedrooms? bathrooms?

Thanks for the info, will make sure to read them. You are very helpful

You didn’t say you were a transfer. If you were a freshman I’d say to live in the dorms first year.

You are asking ME about how the dorms are? Why are you not reading each college’s web pages on housing? Here, look, UCSD has some really nice looking new on campus apartments with ocean views, just for transfer students. Perfect. You will have to pay a little more for a single room. You are guaranteed a room as a transfer this year, but you are not guaranteed a single.

But you might find something cheaper off campus. I don’t know how you work it out timing about finding a place and putting deposits down if you are on your own off campus. Renting often requires first, last and security deposit. There may be a delay as to when you actually get the funds. When you live on campus, you just send in a housing deposit.

@BrownParent Thanks for the link.
I am going to visit there May 10. Will take pictures and let others know how it was. :)

Keep in mind that one of the challenges of living off campus is that you are responsible for paying a month’s rent, a security deposit (equal to one month’s rent) before you move in. You will need food and utility money if utilities are not included. You will most likely need to have this money upfront where financial aid funds are usually not distributed until approximately 6 weeks after the school year begins. My recommendation s that if you can get on campus housing, you should condisetr taking on campus housing.

Another challenge of living off campus is you will have a 12 month lease, most likely. This means either you stay there in the summers, and find a job. Or you sublet if that is permitted. The rent and utilities need to be paid regardless.

Also, unless you get a furnished place, you will need furniture.
