Off-campus Housing

My son is trying to find an off-campus apartment for his sophomore year, and is considering the Access Road apartments, mainly because he can get a 1BR apartment by himself for an affordable price. I assume these apartments are cheap because they’re older, don’t have a lot of amenities like pools, etc., and are not very close to the University. But then again maybe there are other reasons.

Does anyone live in the Access Road apartments, or know anyone who does? Can you tell me anything about them?

I would appreciate any info. Thanks.

I really don’t think there is anything WRONG with this area; it’s just not the nicest. I don’t think I would worry about it from a safety standpoint; however. Just have your son walk around the area and take a good look at who the other renters are.

Is the rent $525 per month? I don’t know your budget, but Walker Realty has a two-bedroom Roundhouse at Hawthorne Ridge listed for $600 and a two-bedroom Oxford Square condo listed for $750. This is cheap as far as rent goes, and your son could turn the extra bedroom into a study and guest room – perhaps even for the parents!

The Access Road apartments are a mile-plus walk to the square and almost two miles to campus. Hawthorne Ridge and Oxford Square are about a mile from campus and two miles from the Square. After all is said and done, I think it would be a few dollars well spent to be in one of the locations I mentioned.
