I'm apply for transfer (I'll be a junior), and I'm wondering about off-campus housing. Does anyone know how difficult it would be to drive to campus every day & find parking? Anybody know if nearby apartments are decent, maybe walking distance to classes, so I wouldn't have to sweat finding parking every day? Actually, I'd like one of those on-campus apartments (Ram Village, is it?), but I'll assume they're filled with returning students - No room for transfers?

I recently received my MS at UNC and have experience in off-campus housing.

It is very hard to find parking, so that will not be an option. There is the option for Park and Ride lots if you live very far out, but the bus system is great.

I don't know anything about the University supported apartment complexes, but might I suggest anything along the "J" bus line.

You get great quality apartments along this bus line, decent deals, and bus service every 15 minutes during peak hours to campus (10-15 minute bus ride). The other perk of the J line is that it has safe ride service on the weekends. This way you can go party on campus and on Franklin street and have a safe way home, it's a great service!

Another option would be some apartments on out on Airport Road (now MLK Jr Blvd). There is great bus service to these apartments as well and some you can walk to classes from with a 15 minute walk.

PM me if you want any specific suggestions as to apartment complexes.

ophiolite, what is the apartment complex called "the warehouse"? I don't know if that is the real name or just what the students call it. Anyway, a friend's daughter lives there and likes it very much--just off Franklin, within walking distance, individual leases (if someone needs a fourth, this could be an option).

Ram Village was new this year and wasn't full with returning students, so most junior transfer students were placed there. UNC placed the sophomore transfer students in Odom which are apartments on campus, but not close.

Another option is to live at Granville Towers. Granville has a parking lot for their students, but you do have to pay for a parking sticker.
www.granvilletowers.com
At Granville you can get a double room, a double room as a single, or a larger room that also has a sofa. Of course these rooms are not cheap, but you have the advantage of being right on Franklin Street and within walking distance to campus. Granville will usually have a floor or two just for transfer students if you choose to live on that floor.

I understand that the Warehouse apartments are all taken for next school year; they were full by October of this year!

The warehouse apts are on Rosemary St. just past Church St. This is one block past Franklin and about two blocks west of Columbia Street. One of my son's housemates lived there last year. It's a bit pricey, but it is convenient.

My son shares one half of a duplex with two male friends and the other half has three of their female friends. They liked the location, additional space, a porch with swings and the fact that they have a yard and 8 parking spaces. It costs them about what the Warehouse would cost. Their house is closer to the academic core than his south campus dorm was. Though he has a car, he only uses it to get to the library at night, his bike is his normal mode of campus transportation.

I know nothing about the warehouse apartments. I don't think grad students (at least the ones I knew) live there.

Great tips ~ thx! I'll be checking out all of your suggestions, if my transfer goes through. Let me know if you think of anything else I should be considering... btw: Would walking to the academic area on campus be closer to Granville or RAM?

granville...

tryinhard, have you sent in your application yet? Is it rolling admission for transfers? Do you apply to a specific major?

Hi mkm56 - Yup, hit the "send" on my application over winter break. I didn't get my college transcript or high school transcript mailed until late last week, though, which might hold up the process. I honestly not sure about the "rolling" policy for transfers... Their web page just says the absolute application deadline and absolute latest decision date. Hmmm.... maybe I'll call Admissions with this question. Applied for the Inter'l Relations major. I'm currently taking my 3rd level language class in college, and I know I'd need to take 3 more semester after this!

Son is going to start on his application now I believe. He has been hesitant about starting over as a junior in a new school, new place, etc. Foreign language is not his forte, power to you--I admire people who can grasp it. Son is in his 4th level foreign language now--literature--and just wants to survive! Good luck and if you find out any interesting info on transfer stuff, keep us posted.

I'll be calling on Monday about our "rolling-or-not" question. Regarding transferring junior year: I, too, have hesitations, but I wanted my application submitted anyway, so at least I'll know for sure if I have this option or not. I realize that in transferring, it will likely put me at least a semester behind (assuming not all courses will transfer, and I might be behind in my requirements for the major). Also, I have a respectable GPA at my current school, and there's a good chance grading might be tougher at Chapel Hill. I'm considering what impact a lower GPA would be in applying to grad school vs. graduating from a more "prestigious" university. I have to talk with more people that know about such things...

tryin, did you find out anything about the "rolling"?

I have it on my pop-up calendar to call on Monday. I'll let you know! I PM-d a previous poster that I'd check on it, and... well... There are a bunch of us that would like to know, so I'll follow through. Perhaps Tryinhard does know something by now, though.

I know last year that all transfer students were notified on the same day; no rolling admission. They were notified earlier than expected just like regular admission and Early Actions was, but everyone hear the same day.

Thanks pokey.

Just (finally) talked with Admissions ~ They said transfer applicants will all be notified in April (no rolling). That's the word from the horse's mouth.

Thanks so much for sharing your information. Good luck with everything.

tryinhard, you still putting UNC as your #1 transfer option? Have you looked into any housing? Son has been surfing through apartments on internet, but has not looked in person as it seems moot until you know for sure.

Hello! Honestly, I've almost put my transfer request out of my head until I get notification. It would be really tough for me if I started really digging into apartment options, only to learn my transfer has been denied. So... think we'll hear this week?
