My son will be attending UMCP this Fall , but will be doing the Freshman Connection Program. Have to find housing for him for Fall 2009. Spoke to off-campus housing office and they sugested three apt. buldings houing these students - The Towers , Parkside Apts. and University Club. Saw the first two on a visit last week, but was not able to visit University Club. Can anyone tell me more about this building or the others? Thanks!

Towers is not within walking distance. University Club is overpriced given the amenities. Parkside seems like the best bet

You should also consider [The View](http://www.universityview.net/)

Thanks! Was wondeirng if you know anything about Parkside and University Club as far as the conditions of the buildings, room, etc.?The Pakside did not have a model apartment, and I was able to walk right into the building, so was concerned about security. Also a concern was that on one of the websites I had googled, there were comments about insects, rodents, wanted posters, etc. regarding the Parkside which really concern me. The Towers are really nice, but too removed from the main campus, and The View, I think, is only for upperclassmen (or so I have heard). I am considering University Club. Besides price, have you heard of any other positives/negatives? Thanks for any additional feedback.

Sorry, I don’t know anyone who lives in Club. You should definitely try and look into getting in the View. It is the best option out there.

This link from that other thread should provide new information/confirm what you already know.

Thanks for the info.! The other website also had some insight to the different apartments.

There is also Knox and Hartwick towers, across from South Campus Commons. Not sure how to get info regarding them. Perhaps call the off campus housing services at the university. They are in a very convenient location (well, a bit far from engineering buildings if that is what he is!), steps to South Campus and route 1 and on late night bus route.

Many upperclassmen choose to live in Parkside. University Club is right next door to that. I’ve never heard of security problems IN the apartments, but the neighborhood is not the greatest and there are sometimes muggings at bus stops late at night. My friends and I nearly rented a house in that neighborhood, right up against Parkside, but shied away from it upon learning the house had been broken into several times. In either case Parkside is popular student complex and probably safer than a house, never heard anything about roaches/rodents…

I agree that The View is the best choice in terms of location/safety. I’ve never heard that it was strictly for upperclassmen. It IS very over priced, though, rent has gotten up to as steep at 800-900 month (blessedly this includes utilities, but still!) for very mediocre sized apartments.

If you can pay for the View, go for it. If not, Park side does seem like the best bet. But I would check into KNox and Hartwick towers also! A third option might be to look into the student newspaper/other outlets to see if students are advertising rooms in group houses (diamondbackonline.com and <a href=“University of Maryland | Your Home Away From Home”>University of Maryland | Your Home Away From Home). There are often open spaces because a house mate is studying abroad, they did not get enough people to fill the house for their financial needs, etc. This can be sketchy because sometimes students put in more kids in the house than the lease allows (landlords are usually well aware of this, the city law is a little dumb, though a law nonetheless) so your son may be living in a house but not protected by a lease. FYI only 5 unrelated people may rent in a house according to city law, no matter the size of the house. HOWEVER these houses can be very close to campus in safe neighborhoods (I recommend in/around frat row, as well as off Metzerott for the safest locations which are also majority populated by students), a better price for value, etc. (And many are also legal of course haha). Many frat houses have open rooms, too. I’d say it’s worth a shot.

The View doesn’t accept freshman applications. It’s on their website under ‘Apply Now’.
