Off-campus housing

Hello everyone,

I am admitted as an international transfer and I am having troubles trying to find off-campus housing. Honestly, I do not have enough money to stay on-campus.

I did try to look for off campus housing on the Rice student center website, but there aren't much choices available now because I won't be in US until this August.

Therefore, may I know are there any apartments ( studio/efficiency/1bed,1bath) that are walking distance to Rice University? Preferable less than $650 per month?

Thanks.

I’m not sure if getting off-campus housing would be a solution for you, because I think real estate in the area of Houston that Rice is in is rather pricey.

My son’s share of a nice 4 bedroom/2-bath duplex apartment just a few blocks from Rice was/is $550 a month - but he does have 3 other Rice roommates. I have seen garage apartments and other apartments in small, older complexes near Rice that rent for that much. It is too early for a lot of the small apartment complexes rented out by individuals to be advertised (as opposed to the big apartment complexes - which are often preleased). You may have to wait until July or early August to find a place. Some places just put a sign out in the yard to advertise… If you would consider a roommate, you could try connecting with other transfer students through Rice or on Facebook; it is usually cheaper to share an apartment than rent alone. There is a lot of housing, so don’t worry - it’ll work out! (P.S. I suggest you try to stay on-campus at least the first semester if you can afford it; it will help you find your place and make good connections with your res college and the Rice community.)

While it’s still early, as anxiousmom pointed out, this website might give you a sense of what to look forward to …Google maps are helpful too.

Congratulations, Keith!

Keith C.,
We have a garage apartment which is just a couple of blocks from Rice campus and it could fit your need nicely. The apartment is about 700 sqft, one bed-room, furnished, and very nice. It has a kitchen, bathroom and dining area. The washer and dryer are downstairs in the garage. All paid utilities include water, internet, basic cable TV, trash. You will be responsible for electric bill. Our son lived there while he studied at Rice. He just graduated this past May and moves on to a different state. We charge $750.00 per month; however, we could work out a plan for you. If you are seriously interested, send your reply to my email as follows:

I can then send you some pictures of the apartment and additional required information.

HNLam

This sounds like a fine option – and only a couple of blocks from campus!
I really hope it works out, Keith.

Very kind of you, thnhnl, and I hope your son who graduated is doing well!

wow, thnhnl, thats your first post? Something seems a little shady about this…

(Someone on the internet just happened to make a first post about an apt garage)—When did safety go out the window?

I would look for a roommate. I’m currently near.rice in a really nice apartment paying 550 per month. It’s a two bed two bath with washer dryer etc

See if there is anyone you could live with or maybe put up a listing??

The other thing that might be worth it is . Somehow make it onto campus for the first semester and find people to live with from then on. There will be someone else who wants to move oc. Sophomores (at many colleges; some juniors) get kicked off, so there is an abundance of people and friends you could live with.

good luck

Also, Im guessing you will not have a car. How about a bike?
