Off Campus Housing

I am hoping to make the whole housing hunt much less stressful by starting early.

I am a sophomore living on campus for 2010-2011, but I don't know what I am supposed to do for the following year. I would appreciate any help you can provide me with on the following topics:

1) How do you even go about renting? What is a general outline for the process.

2) Can you rent single rooms or do you have to rent in groups?

3) How can you rent rooms in houses (not apartment buildings)? Do you have to rent in huge groups for these?

4) If the website says that there are 1/2/3...etc bedrooms available, do you rent a 3 bedroom in a group or is it done individually? How many people can live in one room? Are there limits posed on how many people can live in one room?

5) Possibly most important to me right now, let me know which apartment buildings/houses are considered pretty good for the money. I don't want a fancy room, but something that won't be falling apart every week and have a bug infestation. I won't be bringing a car on campus so I don't want a place more than 20 minutes away from Central. Also, which places I should stay away from if I can?

Thanks ahead for any input!

you can rent single rooms in large houses divided into private rooms (though the other people there might be friends already)

its easier to rent as a group(landlords would rather fill a house sooner than later) though there has been major drama about a roomate not paying rent or going to live somewhere else last minute leaving the rest of the roomates no choice but to split the cost of the rent that the roomie who left should have been paying!
