Off-campus living

I am thinking about coming to Rutgers New Brunswick this fall. I would definitely like to live off-campus. Have any of you ever had any information regarding this type of housing? Does school help at looking for apartments or is it all up to me? Can you get housing near the campus? How do I look for any housing that would be off-campus??

There are lots of off-campus housing near Rutgers. Here is a website:

pick rutgers NB and search away!

I got a room in a house that costs 425/month including everything!

Thank you! That is what I was thinking about! what does your room include? How big is it??

my room is pretty damn small but I have a computer table, single bed, drawers and a space to hang my clothes. I can also use the kitchen as well as washer and dryer.

Do you have a car? how far away do you live from campuses where you have your lessons?

Yes I do have a car but if you don’t live on campus, you will be assigned a parking permit where you have to park your car at the livingston campus(Yellow Lot). So I always drive to livingston(like a 5 minute drive from my place) and park my car there then take the buses to my classes.

You can’t just park anywhere or anytime you want. There are regulations as to where and when you can park for each lot.

Do you have your lessons on different campuses? Why can’t you actually park the car in the parking lots of different campuses? Is there maybe any way to park it near the campus, where you have the lessons??

I am taking 4 classes and all of them are in different campuses (college ave, douglass, busch, livingston). There is a just a rule that you can NOT park at any parking spots on each campus. However there are times where you do can park at those lots(normally after 6pm). If you don’t live on campus and are getting a commuter permit here are the lots where you can park
[Department of Transportation Services | Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey](<a href=“Parking & Transportation Services | Institutional Planning and Operations”>Parking & Transportation Services | Institutional Planning and Operations)

notice that from 6 am to 2am you can park your car at the livingston campus (yellow lot). That is the lot where all the commuters park their cars in. But if you have a class let say at busch or any other campus after 6pm, there are some lots where you can park your car in.

How do you eat? do you have a mealplan that you use at campus or do you go often to the shop and cook for yourself? Do you live alone or with somebody?

There are tons of places to eat. You are only required to have a meal plan if you live on campus. In my opinion they are a waste of money.

I am a senior graduating from Rutgers and I’ve lived off campus for the past two years. A lot of students find their housing through the off campus search engine: [Home | Off-Campus Housing Services](http://ruoffcampus.rutgers.edu/) Most of the housing options are walking distance from either the College Ave or Cook/Douglass campuses. Pull up Google Maps in a tab next to the listings to see exactly where the property is located.

If you live off campus you there are a couple of smaller meal plans that are a decent price.

75 Plan … $950 per semester
50 Plan … $735 per semester

These are nice if you have a couple hours to kill between classes and you don’t want to go back home. Just hang out in the dining hall. You get your best value if you use these for dinners and pay cash for breakfast, takeout, or if you just want a sandwich at the student activity center. Don’t waste a swipe on those unless you aren’t really using up your meals.
