Off-campus meal plan

Does anyone have any familiarity with the off-campus meal plan? My son will be renting a house in the fall so I wondered if the plan was worth it (I think it’s 40 swipes plus $50 on the Buck card with no discounts for using the Buck card at campus dining locations). He’ll have a ktichen but the grocery store isn’t that close but there are lots of restaurants near. Any thoughts?

my son as lived off campus for two years ,and never thought about getting the plan.there are plenty of places to eat;and you can always load cash on the buckeye id. most all of the places honor it.he has some friends who live on campus, and sometime they treat him.he does the same when they eat off campus

Our’s lives just off campus and uses the commuter plan. We were reluctant at first since it’s more money (already paying close to full tuition), as always, but he does not have a car and he didn’t know how easy it would be to get to the store so decided to try it for a quarter. It’s actually worked out well, as with his pretty heavy schedule it was easier to eat on campus much of the time between classes or while studying there, and he/we didn’t have to keep dealing with cash or adding it to the ID.

Son can cook and now has a good friend with a car and can get to the store, so it’s more just for convenience now. He’s used all but one or two swipes each quarter. He will have a car next year so probably won’t add it, but it’s been a help to him this year. He is very money conscious so he would not add it if he didn’t feel it was a help. And we like that it tends to keep him on campus more; think sometimes the kids who aren’t living in a dorm become a little “disconnected”, so a bit of a bonus. But it’s not exactly a penny-pinching dining plan…

Thanks for the input. DS will be on campus doing research this summer and likely won’t have a car so I will find out if he wants to try the off-campus meal plan. If he likes it, he can do it again in the fall.
