Off Campus or On Campus Housing

Any recommendations for housing? Is having a kitchen/living room (university towers) or having a sitting area/bathroom (Dobie) worth living off campus without the dine in dollars? Applied early for housing but San Jac is over 11k! A room at University Towers with a meal plan is $9,795 and a room at corner room at Dobie is $9,150 with a meal plan. Would Jester be a better option than University Towers or Dobie??

Where you eat really depends on your schedule and how much time you have before, between, and after classes.

If you live off campus you can still eat on campus paying with Bevo Bucks.

I am currently at Dobie (don’t have a sitting area though), and the food is really not good in my opinion. There isn’t a lot of variety, and most of the food is not good quality except for the deli food and some of the vegetarian options. There seems to be much more variety on campus, but I have only eaten at JCL twice at orientation so I can’t speak about the quality of the food really.

Towers is party central on West Campus. It would be “normal” to step over vomit to get your room each Thursday-Sunday night. I would highly suggest living on campus if this is your first year. Jester gets a bad rap but it is classic dorm living and your access to food services is great.

My son lives on campus in the Kinsolving area - Andrews dormitory. He eats at least two meals a day at the Kinsolving dining hall and loves it - lots of variety and healthy foods. If you are a girl consider Kinsolving dorm. The coed dorms in that are are the honors dorms, duren, and the residential fig dorms - whitis court.

Also, he has commented that he has a couple of friends in Dobie and they have said that there is no variety - same thing over and over.

UTMother

Littlefield that this year became a part of Honors Quad is still an all-girls dorm.

My daughter lives in Honors Quad. Last semester she had a horrible schedule, thanks to FIG :), and she was not able to eat in Kinsolving when she had time between classes because Kinsolving was closed. She had to buy food in grocery stores, go to other places on campus or to the Drag. She also kept a lot of microwavable food in her room. She has a lot of Dine in Dollars left. Her Bevo Bucks account is almost empty.

So it all really depends on your schedule.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I toured Jester, San Jac, Dobie, Castilian, and Towers.
The Castilian was not impressive and is under new management so who know how that will turn out, also said that they have lots of ACC students.
Towers-nice large rooms but too far
Dobie-LOVED the rooms but worried about the food and elevators
Jester-not too bad but ended up on a floor that smelled SO BAD!
San Jac- nice but sterile/hospital feel, expensive

I didn’t look at any other dorms because I want to be close to the Gregory gym and McCombs. But still can’t decide!

In the Jester area, try looking at moore-hill and brackenridge/roberts. They are smaller than Jester, so have more of a community feel. Older buildings so they have less sterile feel than San Jacinto. I’ve heard a lot of positive reviews about Brack/Roberts. The older buildings tend to have slightly larger rooms.
