Planning to live off-campus. Just curious
My D went shopping weekly and spent about $50/week on food.
Entirely dependent on you and your habits.
Off campus, my then-boyfriend and I ate for ~$200/month. I know the amount because that’s what we got in foodstamps.
$200 a month per person is a fair estimate if you plan on eating the vast majority of meals at home
Depends on your habits. Estimate the value of what you eat now to get a rough idea.
I usually go to the grocery store once a week and spend anywhere from $30-$50, so maybe $120-$200 depending on your habits?
Also… If you have people in your life who are willing to help you stock up, go for it. I have tons of canned food from my grandma that helps reduce costs, and that I could live off if need be. I’m very appreciative.
It does depend. 120-200 seems like a pretty fair estimate. It depends on a few factors. Are you buying free range or organic produce? That will drive up costs. One of my friends (who has a fast metabolism) bought a lot of rice and pasta and his food costs were pretty hilariously low.
Don’t forget that you need stuff like toilet paper, dish soap, sanitary supplies (if female), etc.
^ That’s true. Also, it’s worth mentioning that 120-200$ probably won’t include standard collegiate alcohol intake lol.
I personally spend maybe $200 a month. I eat moderately cheaply: I buy tons of boxes of cereal at a time with almond milk. My diet consist of that mostly.
It really depends on what you eat, how much you eat, and how expensive the area is. I’m living off-campus for the summer and spend around $250/month on food because the only grocery stores within reasonable (30 minutes) walking distance are fairly expensive organic food stores. On the other hand, I spent a month at home alone last summer and only spent around $150 because the nearby grocery store was very cheap.
