I'll be attending one of USC's off-campus receptions tomorrow (in NYC at the Marriott) and to anyone who has been to one of the receptions already - is it a casual event, or should I dress up a little bit? I'm guessing that I can probably wear whatever I want, but I just want to make sure. Thanks to anyone who can help!

You can wear what you feel comfortable in–similar to what you’d wear to an on-campus interview. If you’re male, nice slacks and a polo or button-down shirt with perhaps a blazer. If you’re female, the same or substitute a skirt.

My S wore a nice t-shirt & cargo shorts & athletic shoes to his off-campus receptions, as did many of the males (but it’s HI). He wore similar clothing to his on-campus interview in HS–he’s a pretty casual guy. [At USC, he continues to mainly wear t-shirts & cargo shorts–switching to slacks when the weather is colder; his sister & her friends at USC dress up a bit more, but all fit in just fine.]

Well, a lot of people just wore t-shirts + jeans to my off campus reception. i just wore a polo and a jacket. Nothing fancy at all lol

Another vote for jeans + t-shirt or whatever you wear every day. If you think anyone is paying attention you are mistaken… unless you choose not to take a shower

Wow, this is two posts in a row that I totally agree with GroovyGeek. :)

It is much more of an information session than a reception

Thanks to everyone for the input! I decided to wear a sun dress and a cardigan, but there were people there just in jeans and a sweatshirt. I think it was the refreshments that made the event more formal, actually, haha.

S & most of the males just work cargo shorts & a clean, decent t-shirt to both; some dressed up and wore long pants and/or collared shirt. He was fine. The girls wore clothing similar to whatever they wore to HS & were also fine. Neither event is particularly “dressy,” unless your community tends that way.
