Is it bad to take an off period in my Sophomore year?
Will it hurt my chances of getting into a decent college? (Dream College- Stanford)
I'm taking an off period due to my school being too full.
There's only 1 other elective class that's open and it's Theater I.

Would I be better off taking Theater I to fill up my schedule, or taking an off hour in the Library to study?

Thank you in advance.

Is there something you could take online to fill the period? Colleges generally frown upon off periods, unless its a requirement of your school or you’re a senior. If you use that time for another class, however, or if there’s a reason that you need to leave school early, for example, an internship or job, that’s ok. But I would strongly suggest you look at other options to fill that spot.

Since Theater I is the only other available course I can take, I’ll have to settle for it?

There are outside source of classes, example, online. You can look into different types of ways to take classes other than those on campus. In my county, there is a special online school by the county that if you take a class as part of your full load, is free. Many states have virtual schools too. I would suggest you look at all the options before just “settling”, but it may be best to sign up for the class, since many colleges like to see at least one fine arts class. Would your school let you drop the class before instruction began if you found another class to take?

I’m sure they would let me drop the class, and I’m not exactly sure if I can take online classes to fill in that period…
I’ve never heard of online courses, and my school has never mentioned anything like it.
It might be a bit too late to sign up for Theater I, the classes are filling up quickly and I’m not sure if my spot or ANY spot is still available.

Even if your school won’t accept the class for credit, colleges will still consider an online class as part of your load. I would suggest googling something like your state + online high school courses and trying to get into Theater 1 for now. There may not be anything affiliated with your school, but for an elective, that really doesn’t matter, since you won’t need it for graduation. Online courses are quite common where I live- in fact, my brother did his entire senior year online and I took one over the summer.

But, worst case scenario and you can’t get into an additional class, you can have your GC either mention it in the rec or you can put it in the additional information section when you apply if your really concerned. With an explanation, it won’t be the be all end all. I just would do everything you can to see if you can fill the spot first.

Okay, I see.
I’ll check if I can fill the spot with something and look online for some courses.

Thank you so much for your help.
I really appreciate it.

No problem and good luck!
