I think Whitman is one of the more underappreciated colleges, to the point that if it were located in the Northeast and "had a history" I think it would probably be a so-called "Top 10" LAC. I understand Mmaah's wish for it to remain "undiscovered" completely.

Good luck to you, CD, on your journey with your D over the next year.

Thanks TD, and I agree with you. Move Whitman to the outskirts of Seattle and watch the school shoot up the rankings. But, my daughter loves the town of Walla Wall too. So, I hope they leave it right where it is! LOL

S will be a senior next year at Whitman. He has been thrilled with his experience there - it has been everything he hoped it would be and more. If anyone has any questions, I'll be glad to answer them. Good luck to all of your offspring.

S is an econ major and has been very happy with all the faculty except one. His advisor since freshman year has been the chair of the department, and they have developed a nice relationship. It's hard for me to judge the caliber of the program, since I'm not very knowledgeable about economics. But S seems to have had a wide assortment of classes from historical to theoretical to practical and his interest in the field appears to grow the more he learns.

My personal experience with health services - though limited - was awesome. S had a pretty serious leg injury from playing intramural football - was immediately transported by health services to a local ER, where he was given an MRI, crutches, strong pain meds, and sent back to school. Health services offered to let him stay there (they have several beds), so he could be taken care of and not have to deal with getting around, but he declined. But health services did arrange daily medical appointments with an orthopedist for the next week, which took some doing, and transported him there and back; they also helped with transportation to and from physical therapy for the next few weeks after that. In addition, the nurses at health services checked on S daily and gave me reports by phone. Although S might have managed without them, I couldn't have! S reports having gone there several times since for things like the flu, etc. and seems to have positive experiences. My sense is that the students find the staff there helpful and respectful and make use of them freely.

Two Timer:"Although S might have managed without them, I couldn't have!"
That is priceless and music to my ears. Son is a diabetic( type 1 juvenile onset three years ago) with an insulin pump, we have a lot of stress due to this and a few nights a month each(hubby and I take turns) where we are up at 2 or 3 am checking his blood sugar. I am so glad I asked you that question. S will be fine, I'll need therapy and pills. So thanks for the detailed info on how the nursing staff assisted him. I am an RN myself so I appreciate the professionalism and care they gave your son. Sorry he was hurt so badly though.
We are seriously considering ED because, it is s first choice, everytime I ask a question about how Whitman might handle his medical/dietary needs I get a solid response that they can and will be able to assist him to the degree we would want. This is such a big part in his choosing the right school. We are lining up our financial position now in case the merit/F.aid is less than we hope for. So no matter how that part turns out he can go if he gets in.

CD, great idea. I've made a few phone calls, pulled a few strings...Whitman will be moved from Walla Walla to the outskirts of Seattle in time for Fall 2007 classes. Thanks for the suggestion.

CD, the sad thing is, there are people who can just pull a few strings, make a few phone calls, and make wondrous things happen. I confess that I am not really one of them, that I don't have the secret handshake or the decoder ring.

But the idea of Whitman zooming up the ranks if it were only located in someplace more, you know.... was just too delicious to pass up. And the moral of this lesson is to take care about what you say, someone may just take your idea and run with it.
