If my parents pay the bills for my credit card, will I accumulate/receive credit history and build my credit score?
Or, because they are paying, will this not count towards my credit score?

Thanks.

Is the card entirely in your name/ssn? If so, yes, the payment history goes on your credit history....they don't care who signs the check to pay the bills.

2nd this. the card can even be attached to their account as long as your name is on the actual card. my mom added me to her gas card when i was 15, paid the bills but the card was in my name. it helped my credit A LOT. i went to get my own cc 2 years later and had a totally established credit history.

dang... that's a really smart idea i totally didn't think of -.-
ah well, this summer will be my first foray into establishing credit xD

Don't stress it. I had no prior credit history and managed to get a good card that I thought I wouldn't be qualified for. Just remember to do some research; it'll help a lot.

Do people who go to college really have credit problems?

huh? lots of people have credit issues. college doesn't have much to do with it? if anything, college students tend to have more credit issues.

having a sub account (a card in your name, but its your parent's account) doesnt really help your credit as much as a main account would. it might depend on the card too, but its noted on your credit report that its not a main account in your name.

i applied for a charles schwab visa last year and i had no credit at all besides the sub-accounts with my parents. i had applied for a chase student visa a while before that, and was denied. i was approved, and it wasnt even a student card. applied for mervyns credit card and was approved for $700 (i worked there and solicited credit apps everyday. i was shocked to see so any people get denied or $250 and $500 limits when i can get $700. their credit must suuuuuuck....). applied for discover student and was approved. applied for wamu visa and was denied. applied for UCLA alumni mastercard from BofA (i thought it would be cool to have a card that said UCLA on it :p) and was approved (with a measly $500 limit). now i need an AmEx to complete my "collection". :D

ok enough about me. if you want to start building credit, you can look at student cards from various banks (stick with major banks like citi, bofa, amex, discover) because student cards are generally a bit easier to get approved for. or if you shop at a certain store a lot, apply for their credit card if they have one. store credit cards are the easiest to get approved for. once you get one, keep spending under control and pay your bill on time, preferably in full. you dont want to be defaulting on your first card and ruin your credit before you even have any. and always do your research before applying (like: are there annual fees, what are the benefits, interest rate, etc etc).

i have 7 credit cards, have good credit, but tons of debt and want to file for bankrupcy so so badly

i thought the same thing when i was working there! :p
this reminds me, i still get the discount! too bad i don't shop there =/

it might not mean their credit sucks, for example Macys gave me only 500$ but BofA gave me 10k.......... Macys is my first store card, so that is most likely why, only reason i can think of it... my credit score is good, around 720, so no reason aside from that i can see why Macys gave me 500. but ohh well.

store cards have really low limits compared to regular credit cards. max for mervyns was $1000.

if you had a $10k limit you could buy like everything in the store!

interesting. i should get me some levis...on cardholder appreciation day. 28% off! yeee! :D

it's 28% now?! i don't remember it being that much on appr. days...

I just ask my parents to deposit money in my bank account, while I just pay off the tuition fees with my cc. This way I can build up my credit history and gain points for my rewards cards.

isnt cardholder appr. 15%? then stack with 15% employee discount. = 28% :D

man if i shopped there enough to get a big rewards coupon, it would be over. nearly 40% off!

Oh yeah...just about. Oh! You can probably use those cardholder coupons for an extra 10% off too.....that's about 35% off total. Not bad....

too bad they have NOTHING i would buy except levis and dickies. and like...socks and underwear :p

that's what i'm saying.....i think i bought only a handful of things there... and most of them were gifts!
