offers of an official visits and likely letters

1.Current senior; rowing. Have most ivy/highly selective school already given out (mid Sept) their offers of official visits? Are the timeframes for offering these OV's different depending on whether you are a heavy weight or lightweight (men)? If I haven't gotten one yet from an Ivy, is there still hope that they will offer me one?(had been emailing back and forth, during junior year and over the summer now they've stopped emailing me...?)

If it goes well, do you get a Likely letter, and how reliable is that in terms of an actual admission in mid Dec?

Since Likely letters really make your application ED, how can you negotiate your financial aid package with the Likely school if you have no other offers on the table by virtue of having gone ED?

You’ll probably get some responses here, but you might want to repost this in the Athletic Recruits subforum (under College Admissions/Specialty College Admissions). If you do a search (for threads wil “rowing” in the title, for example), you’ll find similar threads about rowing, the recruiting process, and FA.

Thanks, Frazzled1! Athletic Recruits is a much better place for my questions!

There are quite a few rowing folks on here who can better answer whether it’s likely too late or not, and what the coaches’ lack of communication might mean.

But as general advice, you might select the lowest-ranked Ivies in rowing and e-mail them one more time. Tell them you are finalizing your official visit schedule and would love for their school to be one of your 5 allowed visits. Reach out to 10 or so non-Ivies too which have good academics and rowing that suits your ability. My D did this with one school which she wanted to visit but which was dragging their feet on setting up a visit. They invited her, she went, she committed, and she’s loving it there.

Good luck!

Top recruits will have many - if not all - of their visits set by now. Agree with TheGFG but might supplement the email with a phone call saying how much you love their school and program. Now is the time to give it everything you’ve got because the windows for the visits are closing. One exception to this is might be the programs with coaching changes. I know Columbia just found their freshman LW coach so their whole recruiting program is on a later timetable. Ditto for GU LWs which may still be without a freshman coach. Not sure about the heavyweights coaching musical chairs.

Problem is, it is the top recruits that usually get the likely letters so if you are lucky enough to grab an OV slot, it will be really important, after the visit to get a clear sense of where you stand on the coach’s list. Our experience has been that coaches are pretty forthcoming when asked directly. Good luck and keep us posted!

Frazzled1, Are you the Administrator for the Athletic Recruiting subcategory of College Admissions? if not, since you were nice enough to send my first post to the right forum, could you please direct me to the correct location for this issue?

I have tried to send a Private Message to another user, but after doing it three different times
(and I made sure I was logged in; showing up as Welcome, {name} in the upper right of screen before I hit “submit reply”), I get a screen that says I’m not logged in! And my message has disappeared, unretrievable!

Perhaps I don’t have a privilege yet to use Private Message, even though my control panel says I do? If not, what am I doing wrong?!

Thanks for any help you may provide!

The mods are great on this site - one of them must have read the thread and moved it without anyone asking. I just happened to read your initial post on the Parents Forum before someone else had a chance to respond. (Pity the poor athletes if I was the forum administrator - I don’t know beans about athletic recruiting!)

To ask your question about PMs, I’d just go to the bottom of the page and click on “contact us.”

First off, you must be competitive athletically and academically to get a look. OVs are likely closed now at Harvard, Princeton and Brown. Yale is the most academically stringent of the group and is likely closed. They’ll tell you straight-up at Yale if you don’t cut it academically. Penn is having a major OV this weekend, llikely closed. Dartmouth has two smallish OVs scheduled, one is closed, one may be open. Columbia has one coming up next weekend, you will need a 6:32 erg or below with stellar academics to get a look, likely closing. Call Coach Douglas immediately if you qualify. No knowledge of Cornell’s sitiation.

Likely Letters almost always guarantee admission.

You answered the question yourself. You will have no leverage – you get what you get.

Good luck.

I don’t know anything about crew, but this is a tell-tale sign. A Coach my son had been in contact with stopped emailing him and we later found out the coach had found someone he liked better. End of that recruiting dance. They don’t seem to email you to say sorry…

Does someone on this forum have any idea about OVs at the Ivies for Track and Field the same way that Old Scarecrow does for crew? My son still has coaches calling him but is not being offered OVs. Some could be looking for interest on his part first. There have been coaching changes at some Ivies, so that could account for it - maybe they do not have their act together as yet?

Also, do Williams and Amherst and Georgetown offer OVs for Track?

La Diligente,

Some posters have disabled their ability to send or receive private messages. Does this happen for everyone you try to send a PM to, or just a specific person?

It also sounds like you timed out. Hmmm.

Hi whynomithoo,
Maybe I can help. PM me if you have specific questions you don’t want to post here.

OVs are being offered for track/XC right now. Kids I know who have been courted over the last month are now being asked for their transcripts and scores for academic pre-read, the last step before the visit is offered.

I would say it’s time for your son to write a friendly email to coaches saying he is trying to finalize his fall travel schedule and that he’s hoping to be invited for a visit to X school. I know this is bold, but they know he only has five visits, and indicating this kind of interest tells the school they are among those.

The coach will either say “sorry, I can’t offer you a visit at this time” or “heck, yes, send us the following docs”. This is no time to be coy. Answers to this email will tell your son whether he needs to look in another league, or continue with Ivy pursuit.

Williams and Amherst are DIII and can’t offer OVs. Visits are up to you to ask about and pay for. If your son is qualified, he will be warmly welcomed for a visit.

Thank you Riverrunner, we did follow your advice and had some interesting responses. I will pm you.

Speed is probabili of the essence here as coaches can start ending out likely letters October 1 and Will want to wrap up much of their recruiting by the early application deadline.

Aw, c’mon whynot - share with the rest of the class! ;-)

Haha Varska, basically my DS emailed two coaches as suggested by Riverrunner and one emailed back saying apply Ed/EA and we cannot offer an OV and the other one asked for the pre read information and said they would like to host him. It was useful to find out that the first college is not interested in him anymore and he can now narrow the field. BTW, we plan to reread your guide this week!

Very cool! Sometimes good things happen at the 11th hour - best of luck!

D has a few ov’s but really wanted one at a school which had delayed a bit (coach change)… so she took the advice too (“finalizing the schedule, would really like yours to be one”) and heard back today! Thanks riverrunner!

Yay!!! You don’t want to regret missing the moment to express sincere interest. Nice work elileo D and whynotmithoo S!

OldScarecrow, Thanks, was hoping you’d see the post! Can’t PM for some reason according to CC Admin…?

Have some further Questions, but this is my 3rd attempt to post again and it just says I am not logged in or don’t have access…? Maybe my typing/editing as I go times me out?

Will try again with Q’s f this does go through…
