I know it's probably too early to start this, but is there anyone out there looking to try to transfer to Rice next fall? Post your stats!

I am looking forward to applying to Rice next fall!!! I’m trying to find out the stats of transferees from last year’s transfers, but I can’t find them. They didn’t post it up. I’m hoping to email them and ask them.
Post your stats!

My stats aren’t that great, but I’m hoping to retake my tests, and get a better score on them.

Rank:13/460ish students
SATs 1850
GPA 3.8

Extracurricular Activities
EconChallenge Team: 2nd top scorer
Academic Decathlon Team: placed 4th in State, 5th top student at Regional

I’m looking forward to make myself look a way lot better in college. I’m going to the University of Texas at Arlington.

Let’s include if we applied to be freshman at Rice and what our current year in college is… Maybe it’ll help

I applied to Rice RD for Fall 2010

I will be a freshman at The University of Houston and in the Honors College for Fall 2010/Spring 2011

I am a Hispanic, Turkish, Muslim, Female. (I don’t know if that really matters… ha ha)

I was Salutatorian of my class of 364 in my high school in Texarkana, Texas.

I have a 4.0 Unweighted GPA

I was President of the Science Club, Statistics Club, Music Theory Club, and Calculus Club,on the Math and Science UIL team, and in NHS.

I had a 30 composite on my ACT, and will I am hoping to retake the ACT in September.
AP test scores:
(Junior year)
English Lang. and Comp- 3
US History- 3
(Senior year-- of course, didn’t matter on my application for a freshman in Fall 2010 since I hadn’t taken them)
English Lit. and Comp- 4
Calculus AB- 5

I am also hoping to do a lot better in college, especially EC wise. I’m going to be in the Honors College at the University of Houston and take all Honors classes, plan to be in the Muslim Student Association, Hispanic Student Association, Honors Jazz Band (and symphonic band, if the practice schedule doesn’t conflict with my other activities), play intramural or club soccer, be in the Houston Astronomical Society, and if I am accepted, the Houston- Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (H-LSAMP). I also am hoping to volunteer at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences on Fridays, since I will only have one class those days. I don’t know if all of that will work out, because I know I most likely won’t have enough time to do all of those things, but hopefully most will work out. Also, my essays for Fall 2010 admittance were not the best, though they weren’t pitiful, and I hope to spend more time and do a much better job on them this time.

Good luck to everyone! I hope we make it!

^^^ Why don’t you give the schools that accepted you a chance, before deciding to transfer to Rice. You are setting yourself up for failure (not making any friends, not enjoying your freshman year) because you have already decided you are going to transfer to Rice. Who knows maybe you will like the schools that accepted you and you will change your mind about transferring.

^^^We’re planning to, I can assure you that. :)

i agree with colleges00701. Take it easy. And think about this when the time comes. I have seen people come to rice and want to transfer somewhere else (few of em) and they just stick out.

finish your first semester, then reconsider

@simplyjuil and lindayumdow:

Hey you guys! I also want to transfer to Rice University possibly next fall, depending on how much I can offer to Rice that will really attract the admissions committee. While I’ve had an infatuation with Rice for years now, I realize that I am setting myself for failure by simply centering all my attention on acceptance to Rice and not enjoying all that the college I’m about to enter has to offer.

Anyway, I might as well post my statistics. They pale in comparison to anything y’all have but I’m really hoping my time in college improves my academics.

GPA: 3.55 (unweighted)
SAT: 1120/1720 with writing

EC: Cross Country/Track
National Honor Society
Spanish National Honor Society
Key Club

AP Scores:
5- Spanish Language
3- English Langauge
3- World History

Low income (below $30,000 annually), Hispanic family.

That about sums up my high school record. I hope we can continue chatting about Rice in the coming months and catch up on how we are doing at our current colleges before we apply to Rice.

@lindayumdow: Hey, I’m also going to the University of Texas at Arlington!! What a coincidence, right? You wanna find a way to communicate? Maybe we can be friends at UTA and help each other out while there. Let me know what you think.

^^ As always, I encourage you to apply, because if you do not - you are 100% rejected. Now, in my opinion - you should retake your SAT. It cannot hurt. They look at it even for transfers. If the SAT isnt sitting well for you, try the ACT

@Antarius: Thank you for the SAT tip! I know Rice receives many qualified applicants for admission and it will hurt me that I have such a low SAT score. I didn’t know you could retake the SAT after high school so thank you so, so much!

Speaking of Rice, are you currently a Rice student? If so, how do you like it there. Is Rice everything, or at least mostly everything, it’s cracked up to be? Some things I’ve heard about Rice is that its a very diverse college, has a lenient alcohol policy, has amazing professors, and for the most part, has small classroom sizes. Are these statements I listed true?

ok - I have tried to type a response twice. Every time I get to about a page it wipes it

Ill try to get to this later - sorry

No problem! I understand especially since the site doesn’t seem to be letting you post. If all else fails, a private message would do just fine.

Are SATs that important for transfers though? I got in with a average score of 1990 on the SAT and a mere 31 on the ACT. I did have better scores on the subject tests and am also a junior transfer so the case might be different. Your college work and the recommendations will count a lot more I think as it will represent your true ability for college work. Also, I feel that they like a genuine reason for why you are transferring (change in interest from intended major, not getting along with the size of school and such) rather than just trying to get to a school with a higher rank.

as a junior, your SAT is significantly less important. For you your college GPA and rec letters etc. will be the primary deciding factor

Hi! I am also definitely applying to transfer to Rice for Fall 2011.

I’m from New York City area. English major, Philosophy minor, Pre-Law track at Stony Brook University.

GPA: 3.8
ACT: 25 composite score
Internship at a local CPA/Lawyer’s Office
Extra Curriculars (College): Pre-Law Society, Writer for school’s main newspaper, member of Community Service Club Fundraising Committee Chair, Leadership & Service Board member, Philosophy Club
HS Extra Curriculars: National Honor Society, Foreign Lang Honor Society, Art Honor Society, Flutist in the Concert & Marching Band, 500+ hours of Community Service

Receiver of an IB diploma: took all IB courses offered at my high school and several AP courses

your GPA looks good. Your stats will put you in range to get in. Maybe if the ACT was higher, it would help.

Good Luck!

I agree with Antarius! I’m actually not interested in transferring to Rice anymore. I love the Honors College at UH, and think it’s at least comparable to Rice. (The price is definitely better lol). I have great professors who have graduated from Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and of course Rice! Good luck with the application process! I hope you get in!

I really want to transfer to Rice next fall, but should I really even bother if I have a 3.4 GPA for my first semester of college? Granted, I’m at a competitive NE LAC and involved in a lot of extracurriculars/an internship, but can I even get in with 3.4???
Or could it be advantageous to wait and apply for Spring 2012 so I have an extra semester to boost my college GPA?
Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated :)

Rice is no longer accepting mid-year transfers for the Spring. I transferred from Stony Brook as well, and I think I was around that range. But I think besides GPA, I had a very well rounded application.

Dang I was really aiming for spring 2012, I don’t think I can stay at UH that long unfortunately.

I feel for you, if I wasn’t able to transfer in the Spring, I wouldn’t have left my previous university at all. I was part of the last mid-year transfer class so I was lucky, Rice is absolutely amazing.
