Thank you. I guess I will wait and see.

Hi guys I was wondering when is a good day to start turning in the letters of recc. I havent received and Esther account yet or submitted my supplement so I am not sure if I should send them out.

I was wondering the same thing. Does anyone know when/how we recieve an esther account to check the status of our application? I already sent everything except the Rice Supplement.

Hmmm, I was wondering if anyone of ya’ll can help me. I am now going to apply to Rice (last minute i know) but I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help my resume. I am currently at Houston Community College and Wharton County Junior College (financial reasons)

I am finishing up 45 hours from both schools and have a 4.0. GPA
I am a part of Phi Theta Kappa and Volunteer at two hospitals, a doctor’s office, currently working, and I also volunteer at a school. I teach Arabic and i’m also an Office Manager for the school. I have two great recommendation letters coming from my science professors. The only issue is that High School was not that great for me (Family Reasons)

4.35/6.0 Weighted scale

1810 SAT
25 ACT
I was a member of

T.A.SK
DIVERSITY CLUB
KEY CLUB
DECA
and some others.
I won in Regionals and State competition for Deca, qualified for National’s.

I also did plenty of volunteering.

What can I do in this small amount of time to help my resume, and if not should I just not bother applying? be honest. lol In the end I REALLY REALLY want to get into RICE. I just don’t know how much High school will make an impact and especially the fact that i’m coming from a CC not a 4 year.

Thanks for the help!

Don’t try to boost your resume last minute. It is very obvious to the adcoms and won’t help at all.

By all means, apply. Having a 4.0 will help, regardless where it came from. Try to put together the best possible application and good luck!

@Antarius

Thanks a bunch! I’m now relying on only my essays. ahhh, good luck everyone!

Does anyone know the housing situation for transfers if admitted? How difficult is it to receive housing on campus?

It entirely depends on the college. Transfers are often tossed in last … the order goes
Freshmen –> Athletes with housing –> Seniors –> Juniors –> Sophomores –> Transfers. (Juniors/Soph may be switched depending on college)

At Wiess, we are often at capacity, so some transfers get housing for one semester and some don’t at all. You may have better luck at Lovett (if you are put there)

I would say that there is a decent chance you will be able to get a room, but don;t count on it

so does anyone know when we will get the esther account?

i would recommend emailing admi@rice.edu and asking them. They would be able to answer that question for sure.

@antarius Would coming from a CC hurt my chances? And will a great essay and short answers gpa and EC’s help the adcom overlook my highschool years?

@sarah

As long as you have a 4.0 at cc and tons of ecs and volunteer than I believe you should do good. Also retaking the sat and scoring high on it might help.

sarah2010 - I don’t think so. You have shown that you can do well at a collegiate level (it doesnt matter where). You need to just show them that you have the ability to succeed at Rice, and a 4.0 goes a good ways to proving that.

College arent one-and done. That is why there is a transfer system. Do the best job you can and show Rice what you can and have done.

Hello everyone! I’m in the process of completing my transfer app for Rice for next fall. I applied for Fall 2010 as an incoming freshman and got in but declined. Yes, I know. Biggest mistake of my life. Don’t lecture me… I already feel horrid about it. There were a lot of personal reasons, but now I hate where I’m at and if they’ll take me again, I’d love to go to Rice. I’m also applying to Trinity University and Baylor University.

HS GPA: 3.92 (unweighted)
HS Rank: 16/400ish (I need to check the number again)
College GPA: 3.88 (although I have a 4.0 for last semester… I got a B in a government class I took through the community college my junior year of high school that followed me here…)

SAT: 2120 (not super scored…I only took it once)
ACT: 32 (36 on the reading part)
Commended National Merit Scholar

AP:
Computer Science AB - 5
English Language and Composition - 5
Calculus AB - 5
Physics B - 4
World History - 3

College EC: Marching band in the fall (I play French horn); started a Quidditch team that meets once a week, attend a knitting circle once a week, and tutor once a week during the spring
HS EC: Marching band, concert band, NHS, church, involved with a lot of volunteering including going to Uganda to build libraries

I know I’m a little skimpy on my EC in college, and that’s one reason why I want to transfer. Where I’m at, I’m in a pretty decent honors program, but I feel like while I’m growing academically, I’m not growing as a person. I’d like to get involved in more activities, but there are not many opportunities for that here. What are my chances of getting in? I think academically I’m competitive, but the fact that I already turned them down worries me…

your stats are awesome man! I would be surprised if you don’t get in.

My stats:

HS gpa: 3.1 (LOL)
Rank: 56 (LOL)
College GPA: 3.97 (finally got my act together)

SAT: I decided to retake it at the last minute the saturday before last so I’m guessing around 1700… not much studying unfortunately

I really hope Rice looks past my mediocre high school stats and looks at my most recent work

^ thanks!

I run the risk of sounding stupid, but I have a few questions. I’m trying to gather all the things I need to send in and I was confused about one of the items they have listed on the website. It says that I need to send in a transcript of my classes in progress, but isn’t that something I have to fill out on the common app anyway? Perhaps they just want an official one. I’ll probably have to go by the registrar’s office at my school and see if they have any official list of my classes. Or maybe it’s already on my transcript…maybe I should just go talk to the people here. :D

Also, I don’t think it is required (at least it doesn’t mention it on the website), but is it a good idea to get letters of recommendations? I know I have to submit two college instructor evaluations, but because of the curriculum and small school size here, I’m pretty much exhausting my supply of professors who know me with those two college instructor evaluations. Is it worth getting an evaluation AND a letter from the same person? Or should I just go without?

It states that you only need 2 instructor evaluation forms, those forms are your letter of rec.

Thanks a lot. That’s what I figured, but I’m going crazy trying to make sure I have everything. I don’t want to mess anything up!

I received my Esther account a few days ago, and when logging in under my application requirements a component called my HSC transcript from my current university was received yet under my university transcript it says “not recieved”…I was wondering if anyone knew what HSC stands for… I only sent one transcript with my first semester grades and my course listings for the spring 2011 semester.

HSC stands for Higher Secondary Certificate.

Be sure to call Rice and check. They may still be updating their files, as there is a lot of paperwork.
