Officail Rice Tranfer Thread for Fall 2011

Thanks! I called Rice today and it turns out it was just a human error, someone processed my college transcript twice by accident.

How likely is it to receive on-campus housing for sophomores that are not transfers? I would appreciate a ballpark figure in percentage.

Are they more generous to people who come from afar (i.e. internationals)?

It depends on the college. Some colleges kick off sophomores (in which case 30% or something usually stay on). Other colleges kick juniors off in which case almost all sophomores who want to stay on campus are allowed to

No. International students get kicked off just the same as anyone else. Why would being an international student affect this?

Thank Antarius.

Where can I find data on this for each college?

I’m interested in knowing what the retention %'s (following sophomore/junior/senior year) are for the newer colleges:

Martel College
McMurtry College
Duncan College

Also when choosing who stays and who goes, what is their criteria?

Can someone chance me? I honestly have no idea about whether I could get in or not, so I’d like some feedback before I apply.

Looking to major in Economics or Mathematical Economic Analysis with the eventual goal of pursuing a PhD.

Im not sure what they are, especially since Duncan/McM are just setting up. In any case, you don’t often get a choice in what building you get to live in, as you are assigned to a college first.

Any senior who chooses to live on campus will be able to. They decide based on points. At Wiess, freshmen and scholarship athletes who are guaranteed housing are allotted first. After this, seniors get 4 points, juniors get 3, sophomores get 2 and transfers get 1

You make a suite, where 4 seniors would be 16 points and then they choose first. My senior year, we had 2 seniors and 2 juniors (14 points) so we went a little further in the ‘draft’.

Unlike other classes, sophomores (and just in transfers) cannot form a suite. Sophomores (or juniors in other colleges) are kicked off by default. Then they hold a lottery, where the last person out of the hat gets to be the first on campus and so on. Based on how many juniors/seniors want to stay, the number of beds change. After a few weeks, more beds open up.

As a transfer, plan on living off campus with the possibility that you could live on. Don’t expect to get housing, especially with the large class sizes these days.

The only one who can tell you that for sure is Rice. You should apply

Well sure, but I need to know if the investment is worth it or not and if my stats could get me in the mix.

I think your stats put you in range to get in. Definitely worth applying, in my opinion.

I just had a quick question that I have been wondering…since this is the first(?) full academic year that there is no spring transfers (I think), does anyone have any idea exactly how many transfers Rice expects to matriculate for this Fall? Will it be more than usual?

Any one want to chance me? I usually do not care about 2nd opinions because they do not change the outcome of me getting in or not. However, I have been curious on other people’s opinions. I am at Wharton County Junior College (Got into Cockrell School of Engineering the past 2 semesters, but I do not think UT is for me).

4.0 g.p.a with 46 hours as of last semester.

I have 4 teacher letters of recommendations and 4 teacher evaluations. All of which I have gotten to know on a personal basis and top student in each class.

Political Science club

Over 120 hours of volunteering at an elementary school the past 2 years, in which I helped with reading and math.

I also worked hard on all of my essays and really described some of the hardships I have encountered throughout my life.

Thanks again.

zachrby - what are your standardized test scores?

antarius- Unfortunately they are not decent. SAT-1910; Math 700, Crit Reading 600, Writing 610. ACT- 29 composite. I was hoping they would not look at these scores as drastically to determine my acceptance, considering I am attempting to be an incoming junior.

It will matter much less as a upper level transfer, but they do look at them. Also, have you made the honor roll etc.?

Honor roll? As in dean’s list in college or receiving at least a 3.5 gpa in high school? Regardless, I am both on the dean’s list and recieved a 3.7 weighted gpa in high school, if I remember correctly (I was alson involved in DECA, Green Club, varsity tennis for 3 years, and golf my freshman year). I can only hope that they recognize my improvement and realize I have changed into a better student.

I meant at the college level. At Rice, the top 25% or something end up on the honor roll. All in all, your stats look good and put you in range to be accepted.

Make sure your essays, recos and other supplemental materials are top notch and give Rice a compelling reason to accept you.

Oh, sorry for the miscommunication. I have 4 letters of recommendation with the 4 teacher evaluation forms, the profs know me well because I am always in contact with them and ask questions during lecture, debate topics, etc. (one prof I have taken 4 consecutive semesters of math with, another prof I took 2 semesters of govt, 2 semesters of geology, with another) So, they all wrote me amazing letters. I have also had people look over and revise my papers. I think I have done all I can do.

I have already applied to Rice as a transfer…I attend Lamar State College Orange…

I was Valedictorian in high school with a 3.98 GPA and took ALL honors classes…my TAKS scores were close to perfect.
Was very involved…multilingual…community service was excellent in high school and took foreign language classes in both high school and college. I am on pre-law track and graduating with an ASSOCIATEs core complete in May from my college. I have a 3.96 GPA at graduation. Sat score…eh 1850 took it three times since sophmore year in high school and showed improvement every SINGLE time by at least 100 points. I tutor young children as extra curricular and with work and devoted summer time to tutoring as well, no extra currics in college, but i do have an ALL ACADEMIC TEAM NATIONAL NOMINATION.

im so worried. My back up, i have already been admitted to UH, so in case i don’t get in I have something to fall back on.

Quick question…
I was waitlisted from Rice as a freshman applicant last year. valedictorian, 2130 SAT, 4.0 gpa in high school and pretty good ec’s. I’ve attended Texas A&M Corpus Christi this year and have a current 4.0 GPA after 29 hours (including some summer hours), and I am in the honors student association plus some added ec’s and volunteer work etc…
Should this year of college with a 4.0 be enough to get me out of the waitlist pile as a transfer student???

It depends on how strong your application is and how good the applicant pile is
