ACT (breakdown): didn’t take
SAT II: 750 Math II, 720 Physics
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.59

AP (place score in parenthesis): EnviSci (5)
IB (place score in parenthesis): none
Senior Year Course Load: AP BC Calc, AP Physics C, English, History, and Latin
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Scholarship Commended Scholar

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): TONS of environmental activism and other environmental work; hold high leadership position in an international environmental NGO
Job/Work Experience: Worked at bike shop for four years
Volunteer/Community service: variety over all 4 years, total of around 150 hours
Summer Activities: Lots of environmental conferences, bike trips
Essays: Common App 9/10, CALS supplement 8/10
Teacher Recommendation: Probably pretty good 8/10
Counselor Rec: 8/10
Additional Rec: Definitely 10/10 (the person who wrote it thinks VERY highly of me)
Interview: Interviewed with an Alumn, though she wouldn’t really let me talk much which is a shame because I’m great in interviews. She told me at the end she’d write a good letter for me, but she also said she does that for everyone, so I’m sure it didn’t hold much weight in my application.
Other: I consider my extracurriculars to be the strongest part of my app, in addition to my SAT scores. I have committed so much of my time to a cause I truly believe in and want to spend the rest of my life working on, and I think it shines through in my app, though apparently not enough…

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes.
Intended Major: Environmental Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
School Type: Private, Day School
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: none of your business

Reflection

Strengths: Definitely SAT scores, extracurriculars, letters of recommendation
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: definitely played pretty heavily on my passion for the environment
Weaknesses: Definitely 1.) GPA and 2.) I’m a white male from New Jersey
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Mostly a mystery. My app doesn’t look that good for someone trying to go into Engineering, also I’ve got a poor GPA and there are SO many white males from New Jersey private schools to compete with for Cornell.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted UVM. Deferred UW Madison.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My leadership role in a global non-profit organization. Apparently neither “Big” enough or “Red” enough to get accepted, though hoping for the best in April!!!

Reflection
I guess I’m kind of proof that you can be qualified but if you don’t have too much “demonstrated interest” or “fit” for Cornell, you won’t get accepted. I didn’t spend enough time crafting my supplement, and I don’t think I was able to show how much I really liked Cornell and what I would do there. Also, I didn’t really have much engineering focus or experience in my activities. It probably doesn’t hurt to mention that Cornell kind of has a grudge against our school recently, usually we have a 51% ED acceptance rate from our school according to Naviance, but this year it’s around 10%. Apparently someone broke their ED contract from our school last year and screwed us all over.

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Good test scores
Weaknesses: GPA a bit weak, lack of engineering focus or experience, mediocre essays
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Not enough demonstrated interest in school or major
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nothing else so far, awaiting U Mich
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Also probably bad that I have nothing to say for here. I guess the lesson to learn here is that ultimately your scores and achievements don’t mean much if you don’t have a “Big Red” factor that helps you fit at Cornell and make them understand why they would want you.

Decision: Accepted

Objective: ILR

SAT I (breakdown): 2130 - (700 M, 640 C, 790 W)

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Mock Trial (4 years, Team Captain, won 2nd in state, multiple best witness/attorney awards); Center For Tomorrow’s Leaders Program (networked with national business, law, govt leaders); Tutoring Service (Founder & President, tutors immigrant elementary students); Student Body Vice President (3 years); Student Ambassador for Hokulea’s Worldwide Voyage (started project to improve Hawaii’s DOE system and connect Hawaii with other Oceania schools); Servant Group (Youth Leader, camp counselor); MUN (2 years); Wind Ensemble (Clarinet Section Leader, won 2nd place in national competition)

Job/Work Experience:

Volunteer/Community service: NHS (committee leader, organize food and toy drives for underprivileged families, raised $5000 for local and int’l charities); Certified Volunteer at local hospital (year-round supervising coordinator for their volunteer projects, 200+ hours of service)

Summer Activities: ^, also visited Cornell/other colleges

Essays: Common App (9/10) - talked about my Korean-American heritage and related it to starting my tutoring service ILR supplement (10/10) - mentioned specific courses, professors, and clubs that I want to join; related it back to how Cornell would help me economically improve my home island of Oahu

Teacher Recommendation: APUSH teacher rec was great (have a very good relationship with her, talked to her about ILR, why I wanted to go); English rec also very good (excellent writer and mentor)
Counselor Rec: She said it was great and easy to write
Additional Rec: Mock Trial coach rec was amazing (also talked to him about ILR)
Interview: ILR doesn’t do interviews but they contacted an alum in Hawaii who met with me to talk about Cornell/answer any questions I had (he was so nice and it went well)
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Industrial and Labor Relations
State (if domestic applicant): Hawaii
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: $200K+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection:

Strengths: GPA, teacher recommendations, essays
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Showed lots of interest (ie: visiting school, attending info sessions, contacting them, etc); extracurriculars fit well with ILR
Weaknesses: Test Scores were average
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess they picked up on my love for the school
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Did not receive any other letters yet
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I was absolutely in love with the school and embraced what made me unique. Although my test scores were not exceptional and I was definitely not as smart as many Cornell applicants, ILR is all about how well you fit and what you can offer them. I explained why I needed this experience unlike any other and made it clear throughout my application, especially in the ILR essay. My biggest advice is to just work hard and roll with what you got; believe that you can get in and convince the admissions officers of that too. So excited! Cornell Class of 2019!!

Decision: Accepted

ILR

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): 620CR 750M 670W
ACT (breakdown): did not submit
SAT II: did not submit
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 4%
AP (place score in parenthesis): 4- stats, 3- World Hist, 3- Lang
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: All AP classes and two senior releases
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): debate, Key Club, Spanish Honor Society (VP), NHS, STUCO, started up my own charitable baking company, tennis
Job/Work Experience: Work at a running store for over a year
Volunteer/Community service: page for Congressional meetings, retirement center, food banks, GRACE, library
Summer Activities: work, volunteer, tennis, vacation
Essays: I thought my Common App was decent. Wrote about how I’ve grown from travelling. ILR essay was good. I was worried for a while that it was not good enough because I wrote about many different EC’s and tied them all to ILR rather than just focusing on one, but in the end I guess it was decent.
Teacher Recommendation: Both good. Asked my Precal/ Calc AP teacher and Spanish teacher
Counselor Rec: My counselor doesn’t know me personally. Never read it
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: 45 min alumni interview last week. It was more of an info session rather than an interview bc ILR doesn’t require them.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
Intended Major: ILR
State (if domestic applicant):Texas
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: > $150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy

Reflection

Strengths: EC’s were a good fit for ILR
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I just tried to focus on my fit for ILR since that is what they are looking for. I tried showing not just telling how my EC’s have shaped me and what I have learned from them rather than just what I did. I made sure to relate everything back to the ILR school and how I can continue to grow from an ILR education.
Weaknesses: Scores were average and I’m Asian.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I showed what I’ve learned from my experiences and connected them to ILR. I showing passion through my essay.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Only school I applied to.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My passion for ILR and how that is evident in the activities I take part in outside of the classroom. Without your essays, you are just numbers. Many applicants have the same numbers. In order to stand out you need to translate yourself onto paper as concisely and honestly as possible. My numbers were not great, but I guess they saw potential and sincerity in my writing and my intentions.

CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who was accepted. I can’t wait to move to Ithaca next year. It’s really a dream come true. Cornell was my absolute first choice! It all still seems too unreal, too good to be true… Bright future ahead. GO BIG RED!

Decision: Accepted

Objective: AEM (Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management

Summer Activities: Research, Outward Bound, Travel, Volunteer

Essays: Common App (9/10) - talked about my experience backpacking in the rockies.

Teacher Recommendation: 9/10 (4 of them from different subject teachers and coach)
Counselor Rec: She said it was great and easy to write
Interview: Great!

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Applied Economics and Management (AEM) on a Pre-med track, dual spec did not hurt!
State (if domestic applicant): CT
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: about $100K
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection:

Strengths: GPA, teacher recommendations (BETTER, NOT EXCEPTIONAL), but GREAT essays
What you tried to focus on in your application - Leadership experiences, passion for the major
Weaknesses: 0.1 shortfall in GPA (took all AP and Honors classes, 15 APs) and 110 shortfall in SAT score
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess they picked up on my love for the school, passion for both Econ and Health profession (wrote CAL essay including both)
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Rutgers, Have not received any other letters yet (MIT, Chicago, many BS/MD progs)
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I was absolutely in love with Cornell after visiting the campus (changed my #1 choice from Yale/Columbia) and embraced what made me unique. Although I was definitely not as smart as many Cornell applicants (particularly in CoE), AEM is all about how well you fit and what you can offer to build a team of diverse students. I explained why I needed business background to be a leader in healthcare strategies after completing my medical education. My biggest advice is to work on your essays once you are past a reasonable threshold (median) for test scores and GPA. You do not need a 2400/4.00. So excited! I was not anticipating this! There are many better applicants who got rejected and/or deferred, so do not ignore that luck factor. It feels great to be a part of the Cornell Class of 2019! For those who got deferred or rejected, a better future awaits you at another great institution of learning. All the best!

Strengths: My ECs and Test scores?
-I participated in many unique fashion/art ecs (fashion shows and art gallery internships) and found ways to incorporate my talent for service on my own (filipino makeover project). —>reflected on my essays as well
-SAT I is pretty decent, and took 3 subject tests while the college required none

Weaknesses:
-GPA—> It wasn’t exceptionally amazing
-Essays—> I wasn’t fully satisfied with my essays

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I think I they prized my academic effort just like a regular art/science college applicant combined with passion for fashion and art which was executed through my portfolio.

Essays: 10/10 wrote about failure for common essay and my failure to write a good college essay. went for a unique approach and talked about cards and how people sometimes play the pity card or sympathy card. did a twist and talked about how I was that gambler and wrote about my 11 drafts of continual failure. then said I was a rounded person with infinite amount of sides and no 2D paper could represent my 3D character. then described my little actions that defined me. Supplements also in my opinion great. wrote about my talents and singing for ILR that wanted me to instead of reaching fame use my voice to represent the voiceless. Hotel essay really good since it’s my primary choice. wrote about my childhood running an imaginary cafe in my bathtub with rubber ducks and how that came to life at my first jobs and how I aspire to create my own business first through management and operations then to positions of leadership and large enterprise.
Teacher Recommendation: Good
Counselor Rec: Apparently good since he told me but who knows?

Reflection

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: BUSINESS! and my readiness and overflowing aspirations to produce something big. I have laid out my plans and also set out how I would like to achieve my goals (starting from the bottom and working way up) Also on how familiar I am with Cornell since 3 siblings have gone to the hotel school and how I have so much passion for the school since I was very young.
Weaknesses: I suck at Computer class and have almost a C. My school also grades harsher and is in different standards A- is a 94 so my GPA is lower than it should be
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: wasn’t at the top of class grade wise, need more work experience?
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: none
Your “Big Red” factor - I have big business plans and aspirations as well as have that hotelie blood running through the fam

Volunteer/Community service: 200+ hrs at a local nursing home, requisite hours via NHS
Summer Activities: Nothing exciting, Summer youth Employment and Training Program, volunteering.

Essays:
Common Ap: 7.5/10 - I wrote about how as a foster kid, I entered a new household and was introduced to the celebration of Christmas which helped me to renounce my religion and become an independent thinker.

Supplement: 8/10 - I wrote about how I gained an elasticity of language and an ability to speak confidently from becoming a Fanfiction writer. Also, the community which I encountered on fanfiction forums would be one I would seek at CAS.

Teacher Recommendation: 9/10 - Well written by Amherst alumna English teacher, who talked about how my present English course is tailored to Cornell’s Freshman Writing Seminar curriculum, so she knows I would excel there. Has known me for only this year but is impressed with my writing.

Counselor Rec: 7/10 - Good-ish. Gave slightly general comments about my good grades and ability to work hard in school. My counselor doesn’t really like me that much. He’s also not a very good counselor.

Additional Rec: 8/10 - Written by a math teacher who I’ve had for Geo, Trig and Pre-Calc. Wrote about how I manage time between ECs, homework and my job. I have a great relationship with this teacher.

Interview: Unofficial alumnus phone call, spoke for about 25 mins. I asked some questions but when asked about what I like about the school, I choked up. “Everything.” Isn’t a legitimate answer. We spoke about the lack of AP classes at many schools in Upstate NY, and what to expect from the housing scene.

Other: I had an unremarkable visit to which my family arrived half an hour late because we got lost. My Biotechnology and Genetics class took a trip there last year which is when I began to like the idea of attending.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes. I happen to be a penniless ward of the state.
Intended Major: Economics
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):U.S.
School Type: Public, rurally situated, and non-competitive.
Ethnicity: Black and Native American (Did not indicate-Black Foot, no tribal affiliation)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: N/A, Foster-Kid, my family’s income (which is low anyway) doesn’t count.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, Ward of the State, Female.

Reflection:
I feel as though my essays were the best part of my application. I had them looked over by my very talented English teacher, and I felt as though they were compelling. My background in creative writing had to have helped. I also sneakily clued them in on the fact that I’m writing a novel.

I’m so glad this worked for me. I feel as though I had to work through a lot of boundaries to get to this point. Lots of people were discouraging in manners that actually became real obstacles.

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Passionate about career choice and personal values, “humble beginnings to a bright future” type story.

Weaknesses: Awful SAT lls, non-competitive school and the trappings thereof.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I don’t know. I hoped they liked my essays. I think it would be unduly critical to speak of the possible effects my race and gender may have had on this decision. I think my recommendations were inspiring and my class load for all four years was diverse.

Yay! I hope we all find good fortune wherever we end up.
