College of Engineering!!!

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown):
ACT (breakdown): 33 (33E 35M 32R 33S)

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.91/4.3X
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 12/200ish
AP (place score in parenthesis): Considering I failed AP Lang I think it can be concluded that these have no impact on the decision…
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Macro/Micro Economics, AP Statistics, AP Government, AP Biology, AP Physics B, Linear Algebra, H Spanish 3, H English 12
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Math Team President, NHS Treasurer, #1 Varsity Tennis player all 4 years, travel tennis team, named top-50 athlete in state of Maryland, a bunch of other tennis related stuff
Job/Work Experience: None
Volunteer/Community service: I volunteer at a local wetlands monitoring the phytoplankton levels, I pack books for Books for International Goodwill, I volunteer at various tennis tournaments in the mid-atlantic region, NHS tutoring, working with Maryland Child Identification Program, I ran Pennies for Patients this year at my school which was a huge success!
Summer Activities: Traveling the world/Tennis
Essays: I chose the CommonApp prompt that was along the lines of: What’s your favorite place and why? I wrote about coming from an area that lacks diversity (pretty much everyone at my school is white) and how airports have allowed me to see people from all over the world which has made a huge impact on my life. Engineering Supplement was about how I visited the Panama Canal the summer before freshmen year and how that influenced my decision to pursue Civil Engineering. Also mentioned why I want to go to Cornell. If you are an aspiring Civil Engineer YOU MUST MENTION THE SHAKE TABLE (imo). Cornell is one of 5 schools in the nation that has a full-scale laboratory to simulate earthquakes so why would you not include that in your essay
Teacher Recommendation: Both came from amazing people so I’m assuming they were good.
Counselor Rec: I don’t really know my counselor so idk
Additional Rec:
Interview: I just had an info session with a local alum who was very helpful in answering my questions and what not.

Weaknesses: kryptonite
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: A series of fortunate events. Everything just pieced itself together and I could not be happier. I also wrote an email to my admissions counselor asking him to consider my November subject test scores and about how I taught myself physics, biology, and environmental science. Maybe he liked that??
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: ED
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Probably the thing about my grandfather attending. My last line in my supplement was about how I wanted to finish what he started.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I actually have none

Reflection
ILR is about fit. People in my school with higher avgs (GPAs) didn’t get in but I think I did because my essays and ecs made a stronger case for admission. #ILR2019

Strengths: ACT, Essays, ECs, Recommendations

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Captain of the Girl’s Varsity Swim Team (4 years), all girls robotics team, helped start an all girls coding club, ultimate frisbee
Job/Work Experience: Internship at MIT Lincoln Labs summer of junior- senior year. I worked 3 jobs, 1 summer pool job, a year long job as a swimming instructor, and I tutor underclassmen in AP/ regular chemistry, AP/ regular biology, AP B calculus, alegbra, geometry, and precalc, and for AP and SAT II prep
Volunteer/Community service: Lexington Youth Against Cancer Swim, volunteered at local recreational facility
Summer Activities: Lifeguarded 3 years, then did the internship
Essays: Common App I wrote about growing up in a rich suburban town (before my parents got really good jobs and we were not well off) and getting a project to construct a DNA molecule and my teacher told us to purchase 80$ worth of materials from Michaels and instead I built mine from scratch. I also made them pretty lighthearted and put some jokes in there.
Supplement: I think my supplement was really strong, I talked about a science fair project that I worked on that I was extremely passionate about but failed because of lack of resources (especially lack of other students interested in chemical engineering)
Teacher Recommendation: AP Chemistry teacher: Probably really good, I got the highest percent average in my Chemistry class ~98-99% avg, and she really liked me and recommended me for a lot of things
AP French teacher: I’d known her for four years and we are pretty close so probably really good too (She’s known around the school as a phenomenal rec writer)
Counselor Rec: Probably average or below, I bothered him a LOT during this process and he still submitted mine late. Haha I dont think he likes me (he didn’t submit any of the on time, angered quite a lot of highly stressed seniors)
Additional Rec: Supervisor at MIT Lincoln Labs (this definitely helped a LOT) he wrote about all the 3D programs I learned how to use.
Interview: Went really well! I talked to her for 3 hours (I’m a very talkative person and I had a whole page of questions) she was in a sorority which I was super interested in. I also lucked out in that I applied for chemical engineering and I got a chemical engineer. She was also very young (22 just graduated) and told me that she hoped I would get in! Super nice
Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: No but I need to after recent financial events with my family and I’m very worried
Intended Major: Chemical Engineering/ Biological Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Very competitive public high school
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: was 200,000+ when I applied
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Female engineer (first gen college in America, but my parents went to top tier schools in china so not really)

Reflection
I was really happy! Everyone thought I was going to get in but I was dead set on the fact that I was going to get rejected; I even wrote 10 supplemental essays before decisions came out because I didn’t think that I could mentally do it afterwards. I think applying ED helped a lot, I’ve wanted to go to Cornell for so long it still feels surreal.

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I definitely went for the funny route when I wrote my essays (I’m a bit of a class clown in real life) and I figured that out of all the bland essays that they must read about engineers, this could help me stand out. I wouldn’t recommend it if it sounds forced. High scores, so that doesn’t hurt but when they’re weeding out the kids, scores become less important because I’m assuming plenty of kids have top scores also.
Weaknesses: My gpa worried me SO much, especially because of how competitive the engineering school is. It was much better weighted (I had a total of 10 ap/ honors) but of course my high school gets rid of that our year (kids were VERY upset). On Naviance, the gpa average from Cornell from our high school is a 3.77, which might seem low but we’re ranked #1 in Mass and #19 in the country so I think its a little bit low because of how insanely competitive and hard our courses are.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Overall, I think its the combination of ED+ good essays+ rec. It also doesn’t hurt that Cornell likes my high school (We had 6 kids get in ED to Cornell, 11 to Harvard, 3 to Johns Hopkins, 2 to Stanford and usually 5 to each of the other ivies and MIT) ~50 to ivies and 100 to top 10 schools every year.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: I applied to MIT early action but I dont find out until tomorrow and since I applied ED to Cornell without financial aid, I can’t go to MIT even if I get in.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I seriously emphasized how passionate I was about engineering and cornell in my essays.

I had the worst application process ever, the commonapp messed up and didn’t submit my things on time, then I found a typo in my supplement, and I sent in a low SAT II score where I messed up on the scantron and basically had a mental breakdown that I had messed up on a school I had dreamed about for ages. I’m so excited to see some of you guys next year and good luck to those of you who were deferred!

Strengths: My extracurriculars and recommendations were very strong.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I tried my best to not seem like I was pressured or persuaded to apply for what I did by my family, because this was very much my own choice. I covered how my transition into adulthood really helped to shape this decision in my essays.
Weaknesses: My low SAT scores and my essays.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Probably because of the weaknesses mentioned above.

What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My interest in biology/medicine and why cornell would satisfy this interest
Weaknesses: GPA could’ve been better, didn’t take AP calc so that prob hurt me as an intended pre-med student, lowish test scores, no significant awards

Reflection: Spent a month revising the two essays, (at least 8 drafts for each) which was definitely well worth it.

Strengths: ACT scores, well-written essays, high GPA
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I took a chance and wrote about how I love being an undecided major when writing my supplement essay. It was kinda risky to stray away from the prompt a little bit, but I think it helped me set myself apart form the others
Weaknesses: My SAT II scores, lack of AP classes
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: i think the main reason I was accepted was because of my essay.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: probably 5 in state colleges, 2 gave me full rides.

Strengths: Test scores, GPA, EC’s, recommendations, essay…Everything was spot on.
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Demonstrated my love for Biology.
Weaknesses: none that I can think of. Maybe not curing cancer? EDIT: A Z N.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Thought I would at least get deferred. Not downplaying Cornell or anything… but it’s odd that I would get flat out rejected.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted: Caltech, MIT. Rejected: Cornell. Waiting on: Stanford, Cal, UCLA, UCSD, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, UChicago, Northwestern, JHopkins, Penn, Brown, Columbia.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: Did all that I could. Cornell was my #1 choice over schools like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc… I loved both the campus and Ithaca when I visited there. I’m still bitter about the result, but it is what it is. Hopefully I get into Stanford because it’s my #2 choice. IT’S YOUR LOSS CORNELL. Sorry for the rant. Just really frustrated.

Teacher Recommendation: Biology teacher rec was probably amazing (I live in her dorm and she is like a second mother to me; I planned my independent biology project with her help); Math teacher rec also very good but not as special (we had a connection and I did well in his class)
Counselor Rec: probably great

Reflection:

Strengths: GPA, essays, test score, published medical articles
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: Showed lots of interest (ie: visiting school, attending info sessions, contacting them, etc); tried to show fit with college and major
Weaknesses: recs were math and science, not an overwhelming number of leadership positions
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m pretty well-rounded and talked about how I planned to take advantage of the opportunities at Cornell
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: accepted at Tulane (full-ride merit scholarship)
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: I explained in my essays that I want to be a doctor because I want to help people; I also didn’t pretend to be some sort of prodigy that could perform surgery in a week, I talked about how I planned to reach my goals realistically (through the resources at Cornell). My advice is to show who you are in your essays (I know that this is easier said than done), but also to work hard in school and on standardized tests because that will obviously help. I’m so excited to be a member of the Cornell Class of 2019! Good luck to everyone else!

Objective: CALS

ACT (breakdown): 33 (36 English, 35 Reading, 34 Science, 28 Math)

Teacher Recommendation: Excellent; from photography teacher, AP Environmental teacher, Spanish teacher
Counselor Rec: Excellent
Additional Rec: From my Columbia University professor, very good as well
Interview: Went very well, interviewer was actually a family friend and was very kind and informative. Felt more like a conversation than an interview

Other:

Applied for Financial Aid?: No, did not qualify
Intended Major: Communication
State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, mid-size
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: I honestly don’t know, upper/mid class
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Double legacy, grandparents worked at school

Reflection : I am so happy. I grew up visiting Cornell because my grandparents used to live in Ithaca. I’ve been to several sports camps and have done several official visits, and I’ve known that this is the school for me for years. I have heard of so many legacies that have been denied and I was extremely worried about getting accepted because the pool of applicants was extremely competitive this year. Luckily, my stats were about the same as the general pool of applicants. Legacy does not help if your stats are below the general pool of applicants!

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I have been extremely involved with photography for several years now. I use my photography to communicate various ideas or concepts to viewers of my work. I also outlined my interest in photojournalism/my experience with the school newspaper in my essay. I related everything to Communication.
Weaknesses:
I don’t think there were many. I worked on this application for so long and made sure that everything was perfect! Maybe my ACT/subject test could have been a little bit higher.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I really connected everything in my application to the Communication major at CALS. I think it’s very important to tie all you’ve done to your respective major at the undergrad school you are applying to! You can be an amazing, qualified candidate, but you won’t be accepted unless you demonstrate fit.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted to Tulane University $130,000 scholarship. Also applied to UCLA, USC, UMichigan, and Villanova, but I have to withdraw my applications.
Your “Big Red” factor - the most unique thing in your application: My achievements related to photography. In my junior year of high school, I won an international photography competition and displayed work at London’s National Maritime Museum. Not many people can say that one of their pictures was featured at a special exhibit in an international museum at age sixteen! I was also the youngest photographer in the exhibit and later went on to display work at a gallery in New York City. Because of my efforts, I was interviewed by three newspapers and a British photographer. Also mentioned on BBC News London, won scholarship for same picture by a local university, etc.

Congratulations to everyone else accepted- I can’t wait to meet all of you at orientation!

Reflection

As long as you work hard you can do anything. I am by no means “smart”, I just work hard. Hard work can get you into good schools and I think that everyone should apply to their dream school, even if their guidance counselor tells them that they won’t get in.

Strengths:
What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: I love ILR/ Nell
Weaknesses: I got a B- in algebra 2… hated that class, maybe came across poorly in interview, visited CoE before ILR (didn’t know what I wanted to do until senior year)

Cornell generally likes my school since 7-8 are accepted every year and I know of 4 people (one to cals dyson, 2 to cals and me) who were accepted ED this year so I’m not sure how much of that played in.
