Offical Duke Ed Countdown

5 Days, 2 hours and 13 minutes, according to the CC clock

haha mmm 5 days 1 hour 45 minutes...

I just got an 87 on an english paper the only 1/50ish people got an A on. I am feeling quite satisfied, seeing that english is not my thing. 0 final exams to take. I'd say a great day. No Duke mail, but nonetheless, a great day.

Anyone know if the letters were sent today? I heard Georgetown went out yesterday, and of course, there's the "Columbia Massacre." ::crosses fingers::

lol columbia massacre... yea amazing people were flat out rejected... haha
I doubt letters were mailed today... although if they were i could potentially receive it tomorrow :) oh boy its getting too close!

Well I guess we'll see. Someone dropped the Dec. 10th date as the letter mailage day back on our old post.

they didn't mail them today. i talked to my admissions person and she said that they will mail them on the 15th.

this is so frustrating. I don't want to find out online because that's so anticlimactic. It's not as emotional that way. However, how can I resist when everyones on here posting?

you know what sucks even more?? My break begins the 15th, so I don't get the whole go to school and celebrate and tell the entire student body im going to duke thing. Saddening...

But then if I get rejected I dont have to cry in front of everyone...conveniant...

hahaha.... o well... i am going to go insane over the next few days.

I applied to DUKE ED

THATS MY RESUME....

Describe something that has affected you in some manner and discuss how you overcame this situation.

“Hey, what happened to your ear?”
“Nothing; I was born like that.”
“Can you hear out of it?”
“Yes, I can.”
Imagine taking part in this conversation every day for sixteen years. I was born with Mi-crotia, a small abnormally shaped ear that has affected my ability to locate the source of sound. My family and I came to the United States from India in 1989 to find a plastic surgeon specializ-ing in reconstructive ear surgery; however, my parents decided to wait for a procedure to be per-fected. As a consequence of waiting, I have been misjudged and teased by classmates from an early age. However, I finally found acceptance from my peers through my personality, intellect, and courage.
From the moment I stepped into my first grade class, I was constantly excluded and ridi-culed. It was as if I had entered another life contrary to the one that I lived with my parents. The students made my ear a focal point and would not let me join their play groups, while my teach-ers thought I could not work at the same learning pace as the other classmates. Every day I would go home crying, not wanting to go back to school and submit myself to the students’ per-secution. Then, halfway through the year, the moment I had wished for to prove myself as an equal came with the science fair. After receiving first place for my project about light reflection, my self-confidence grew, and I felt that my situation was going to change. I had shown every-one that I could succeed in life even with a disability, and I came to realize that my imperfection was not a hindrance to me at all.
I began to take part in the same activities that my classmates enjoyed. Although my physical appearance made me hesitant at first to join new clubs, I have constantly engaged in various activities, including coaching and volunteering. Last fall I became the soccer coach of a group of ten year old boys because of a snowboarding accident that rendered me unable to play soccer. Even though the kids would sometimes ask me about my ear, they tended rather to focus on my coaching skills. This experience has showed me that if I had shied away from situations that might have made me uncomfortable, I would not have gained the respect of the parents, children, and other coaches. By accepting myself, I have overcome my fear of participating in social activities.
My ear has made me aware of my abilities. I have pondered the meaning of life on sev-eral occasions and developed a new religion which incorporates modern thoughts. I like to ex-pand on the theories of previous philosophers as well as to think about ideas from new perspec-tives. Sometimes I enjoy thinking about different reasons for why I have a deformed ear such as, “I cut it off because I tried to be like Van Gogh.”
My family and friends have taught me that friendship can bring a release from my inner anger and animosity. Fortunately, my closest friends found my outgoing personality to be pri-mary reason for friendship. However, I have constantly dealt with conflicting feelings of aver-sion and affection for the world because of this imperfection.
Even though my ear has been a burden, it has caused me to realize with true gratitude the generosity and kindness of people. After almost seventeen years, I look back on my experiences feeling that none would be the same without my deformed ear. After two surgeries, a great deal of pain, and countless sacrifices, I can finally say to people, “I am like you.”

That's MY Essay...
