***Officals REMS (Rochester Early Medical Scholars) Thread***

Go and thoroughly enjoy the entire experience. I accompanied my son to a few of these interview weekends and UR really does it nicely, very professional, very accomodating and friendly. Great experience just meeting all the other amazing candidates. Don’t be surprised if you see them again at other interviews. Just be yourself and soak it all in. Have fun.

well now im nervous!

It was in the mail. But don’t lose hope. It must be on its way.
Thanks jersgrlmom! Is it a one-on-one interview or a panel? Where did your son finally go and why did he pick that program?

Four years ago, it was a one on one interview with someone from the med school. Perhaps there was a second interview - I don’t remember. Not all candidates were interviewed by the same interviewer and not everyone was asked the same questions. For instance, my son was asked quite a bit about research while other candidates said they weren’t asked that. My advice - know your strengths and try to steer the interview in the direction that best highlights them (something my son did not do).

My son was not offered a spot at UR. He’s currently finishing up his undergrad at Brown and starts med school in Aug (he’s a PLME - Brown’s 8 yr med school program). Similar schools with basically open curriculums, freedom to explore subjects. My son wound up double majoring and studying abroad.

Things work out in the end for everyone - even if it’s not how you expect. But life is funny like that. Worry only about the things you can change and don’t waste time on regrets. What’s most important is to take advantage of the opportunities you have. Obviously you’re already considered remarkable or you wouldn’t have that interview. So go to Rochester, give it your best shot. Show them what you’ve got and be satisfied with that. That’s really all you can do. Remember it’s a small group so it’s probably more about the right fit than anything else. Don’t get too upset if you’re not chosen. It doesn’t mean you’re not deserving - rather that this isn’t the place for you.

Good luck.

I’m a finalist!
I received a letter in the mail about two days ago, but I live relatively close to Rochester, so don’t be too worried if you haven’t gotten yours yet.
