Officership and EC issues.

I know you can't help me with actually getting the officerships, but I hope you can help me with them in the context of the college application. I am a member of three clubs at my school. One is a highly selective program run by the school that was just founded last year, and doesn't have officers. (I was a member the first year it began) I am also a member of NHS, ran for an officership, but lost. The election was ridiculous. Two people happened to get a tie vote for a position, and they are in a relationship. Coincidence? I am also a member of the Young Democrats, which also was just created this year. The junior who founded it became president, of course, but then made all of his friends (also juniors) officers and didn't give any to seniors. Thankfully, the club sponsor made him choose a new secretary that is a senior. However, he is choosing it based on who he thinks performs best in the upcoming Iraq war debate we have against the Young Republicans! It is now a contest! (As you can imagine, I am studying the war like heck to become secretary, no matter how much of a relatively unimpressive officership it is.)

I just don't think I had a great shot at getting any officerships in high school. Even if I do end up being secretary, I am praying he announces who wins by Nov. 1st when by EA applications are due. I am not planning to apply to Ivy schools, but selective ones like University of Florida. I am just very worried that the lack of officerships will really hurt my application. On top of that, I don't play an instrument or play a sport. I make documentaries in my spare time on political issues then post them on YouTube for my friends and fans because it is just a fun hobby of mine. However, because it is not school-related, I don't see how I can put it on my college app, especially when my essay is already about something else. I try to make it school related when I can by participating in National History Day, and going to the national competition in D.C. but I can't do much else with the talent. I do a lot of community service and have been doing so every week at the same place since freshman year as part of it.

Anyway, in short, I just feel like I have a big dilemma as far as officerships and ECs go. Any suggestions?

Don't worry about the "titles" colleges know that many, if not most, are based on friendships, popularity and little else

and of COURSE you can put non-school Ecs on your applications!!!

Its easy to just do school stuff, but to do things outside of school shows more initiative

Just wondering, what made you think it if wasn't a school program, it wouldn't count for college?

Well, I don't win awards for it, and there is nothing to confirm how much time I spend on the projects. I simply do them for my enjoyment and the enjoyment of others. ;)

What I have been able to do though, is mention the documentaries during interviews when the subject comes up about what I like to do outside of school and school clubs.

awards don't matter, the vast majority of students don't win awards

you can put the docs on your application

my D interns for a magazine, its not a school thing, but it is actually more impressive than some school programs

ask any admissiions person, outside stuff is GOOD

and just estimate your hours and don't exagerate, don't be afraid to put it in

^okay..........why does everyone on this board have a laundry list of positions and awards?

^how about you go **** yourself? troll
