This is the thread for all those who are planning on studying for an AP Exam on their own. State the test you are taking, as well as the sources you are planning on utilizing.

Calculus BC: I plan on using Princeton Review as well as previous copies of old exams (MC and FR) Our stupid school doesn't offer this class.. ugh.

Physics C Mechanics: I'm taking Physics B at school, but I will be using Princeton Review and hopefully some other textbooks that the teacher provides me with. If I have time, I will try to study the Electricity and Magnetism portion also, although I hear that is the hard part of the test? We shall see..

if others need a pointer, i self-studied:

AP Biology with Cliffs and Princeton Review, got a 5. Very useful combination, as PR will simplify and clarify, and Cliffs will elaborate.

AP Psychology (5): all you need is Barron's. I'm not kidding.

AP English literature (5): either you have it or you don't, i wouldn't know what to recommed as study material :/ sorry about that. I'd recommend reading sparknotes before the test for good analysis on certain books you're familiar with. Don't shy away from it; even though it's technically not yours, it'll definitely help on the AP.

planning to self study:

Art history: probably with stokstad or gardner's big ole' books.

Macro and Micro econ: Barron's

US govt & polit: Cliffs

Comp govt & polit: ethel wood's little book

World history: Barron's

art studio, but you don't study for this, just work your butt off.

i may do AP Calc AB too, since i'm taking honors calc next year, but i really suck at math. I'll probably have to use Princeton Review to get a good, basic understanding if i do this at all.

AP Psychology

Calc BC -- left over materials from Calc class.
Stats -- a small text and Barron's
Euro His -- A History of Western Civ, Princeton Review, and REA
Psychology -- Barron's, and Myer's book for recreational reading (LOL)
Physics C -- EPGY course, Princeton Review, and Barron's

I'm going to answer my own question--I think I might take Stats independently, but I'm not sure which prep book (although I hear Barrons is good) or textbook--any recommendations?

Physics C - taking the Physics B course offered at my school. Prolly gonna use PR or watever.

Btw, for anyone self studying Euro, i highly recommend getting Birdsall S. Viault's Modern European History. It's a review guide, and although it isn't specifically written for the AP exam, i found it VERY useful. My AP Euro class consisted of 6-7 lectures total (once a week) so i had to do the bulk self-studying on my own. I read Viault's book in literally 2.5 days and was able to get a 5 on the AP Euro exam.

For anyone self-studying Chem, read chapters 1-17 in Zumdahl's textbook, and get ARCO. helped me get a 5.

now that i read this post, i've decided to consider self-studying for the AP psychology.. but im afraid it would be too much in addition to AP bio, AP spanish, AP euro, sat prep, and other classes i would have to take. i've never taken an ap course before, so i don't know if i can pull it off.

yeah, next year I'll be a sophomore...is that too early to self study an AP (no more than 1 or 2, I would expect).

Also, I've been wondering about the benefits of self studying (and assuming one does well). Obviously, if your school doesn't offer an AP, then it helps, but do colleges actually care if you got a 5 on AP Art History or AP Psy?

well, many people self study to also garner one of the ap scholar awards by the end of junior year, usually ap national scholar, which means taking 8 ap's by the end of junior year and getting a 4 or 5 on all of them

I may self study stat or environmental science depending on what score i get back on bio.

I don't know about this... I think I might take BC (taking Calc 2 @college this senior year) and Bio and Psych.... I am a bit worried about not having anyone to help me with it

AP Psychology: Barron's, coursenotes.org, maybe 5 Steps to a 5, and I might take this online with an actual textbook. A lot of you say it's so easy, so I may not need all of this.

AP Chemistry: Zumdahl, taking it for sure online, ARCO prep book

AP Environmental Science: I wasn't planning on doing this, but since people say it's easy and it would go in hand with AP Bio which is what I plan to take next year in school, I'm considering it. I have no idea what to use for prep though.

If I'm independently studying stats, is a textbook needed? Or will just prep books suffice? (I've never taken any stats courses, but I know some probability-type stuff from various math classes--next year I'm taking Trig/Precalc).

Definitely doing Physics C stuff since I'm thinking about minoring in physics or something but only Physics B is offered at my school.

Also thinking about doing Env. Science because it interests me and isn't offered by my school. I already have a lot of knowledge about biology, ecology, and the environment so I don't think it would be too much trouble to self study the rest even though I haven't given much thought yet on prep materials.

source of actual problems from prior calc AP exams, with solns:
http://www.moems.org/calcSolo.htm

if one is taking AP bio, will AP environmental be like.. really easy or will a lot of work still be invovled

04-05 I SSed:
AP Psych, Physics B, microecon. I haven't had the guts to call for the 8 aps I've taken this year yet, however...
*Psych: Barrons all the way. There are MANY web resources, also. Search CC or google for them.
*Physics: I've taken a 3 week course for Honors PHsyics and studied using the SATII book (sorta) and PR. They were useful. Try to get a past MC packet from your school.
*Microecon: APEX online course. Didn't like it, but I used PR and barrons (i think) for it.

IMPORTANT: For FRQ's, get ID & PW from your school for AP central (from CB) and use it. It'll definitely help.

05-06 I plan to tackle:
Physics C, Environ Science...idk what else yet.

Good luck ya'll

If you are self-studying a course not offered by your school, how do you take the actual exam?
