Official 2006 Intel Science Talent Search STS thread!

according to Amber's blog, 25% of Intel finalists had perfect SAT scores. I believe there's a strong correlation, but as others have said, the research paper is given the most weight.

Good luck, guys. I would say something about how even if you don't get semifinalist it's the scientific spirit and integrity involved that's important, but if I were competeing I would say that was BS, so I won't.

If you're not selected, are you still putting the research on your apps?

dualityim, are you absolutely sure that the media/schools are notified much earlier? I go to school in a small town in New Mexico; they don't even have thier own newspaper let alone TV station. Would they have already been notified, or do the schools get the news earlier that morning?

As you can tell, I'm really nervous/excited/anxious to hear the results.

Schools are told by the press earlier on Wednesday, probably around noon, eastern time. However I don't know if this applies to all areas. I'm speaking from the perspective of a school in NYC suburbs.

Sounds good. Thanks for the info. Good luck once again... 19.5 hours remaining.

In response to the question about sat and grades, I'm sure perfection alone will not allow one to do well in sts. My brother had 1600 sat, 3x800 sat2's, and a perfect gpa, but no semi in sts.

oh wow im suprised the media would be that interestestd in seminfinalists, i would think just finalists....

Mainly local media, county newspapers and such.

My friend *****, who was finalist last year, talked to the judges, who said that they care little about stuff other than the paper. Also, I think Intel STS itself announced that.

Also, my friend had 1510 on the SAT and wasn't even in the top 20% of his class.

Hmm... so the ideal situation would be to work for a reputable local newspaper and be the one to get the press release :)

Oh well, I only had a 1310 on the SATs

(so the more obsessive among us don't have to keep figuring out the time left)

haha thanks flierdeke, that countdown was much needed.

Yes, the press goes wild over finalists. There are just too many semis for it to be THAT huge of a deal. That being said, it is simply AWESOME if you make it!

Today I actually met one of last year's finalists, Abigail Fraeman. I'm presenting at the American Astronomical Society conference and so is she so I wandered over to her poster session. Very nice girl. She ended up at some school called Yale. Well, there's a "Cyber Cafe" here with wireless access so I guess I know where I'll be tomorrow at 3 PM, on speakerphone with the rest of my school's research students ;)

last year's intel winner david bauer was a senior in my school
if anyone wants to talk to him PM me

I've heard some not-so-good things about him....lol....

I still wonder what the deal with CUNY was...

Still highly unorthodox, even with the laziness factor thrown in (LOL...).

with that hefty $100,000, college fees should hopefully become less of an issue.

I've heard that he wanted to stay near his family (or as it was more kindly put to me, he's a "momma's boy", lol), but this is unconfirmed. What I have heard from very reliable sources (:p) is that he is very arrogant, or at least has showed signs of arrogance since winning Intel.
