Hmm…not good…

Well, UCLA is a public school after all. It would be nice if UCLA could offer more for those who need it, but the fact is that after all the costs ( living, food, personal expenses, books/supplies, transportation, and tuition ) are taken into consideration, UCLA will be a lot cheaper than just paying tuition at SC.

Indeed.

Do you have a basis for that assumption? Or is it based on the simple-minded approach of adding up costs and tabulating the difference? I actually do have a basis - many of my friends from last year’s spring semester got into schools like SC, UCLA and CAL. SC gave them the most FA not only relative to the amount of tuition costs, but also to the extent that SC was cheaper. There are actually posts here on cc which also confirm that.

Applied: UCSD, UCI, UCLA, Cal, UMich, IU Bloomington
Accepted: UCSD (Muir), UMich, IU
Pending: UCI, Cal, UCLA
Major: Economics/ Business
Pending: Cal, UCLA
GPA: 3.89

Yep, the basis is simple arithmetic. Sorry if I’m not up to your intellectual level as far as concepts go. I’m not arguing about the superiority/inferiority of financial aid at SC/LA. I am stating a simple-minded fact, UCLA’s total cost is less than SCs tuition yearly without considering FA.

Anecdotal evidence attests zero to anyone’s intellectuality.

why do you always have to use such big words, man?
i hate big words.
big words, like, make my brain hurt.

How could you not consider FA in estimating the cost to attend? If you are poor as heck, USC could be free! Whereas UCLA could cost a few thousand a year. This can make a MOUNTAIN of a difference for people who cannot afford college.

Furthermore, the UCs are very stingy on their finaid if your parents make over 60k. Whereas USC will be more than generous.

Depending on your financial situation, USC could be the cheaper one… BY A LOT.

Applied: Cal, Davis, Santa Cruz, UCLA
Accepted: Davis, Santa Cruz
Pending: Cal, UCLA
Major: Anthropology
GPA: 3.4 (4.0 in major)
Pre-Req’s: Finished by end of Spring 2009
IGETC: Done, I think
EC’s: Ten year sales career. Platelet donor. Professional musician. Started the gay support club in high school (a Catholic school). Not much time for much else.
Work: Part time at chocolate factory. (sales in the past)
Essay: 9/10 (is this a self-rank? i think my essay was strong; I survived a heart defect and wrote about that in the perspective of my persistence with all things).

Applied: UCB, UCLA
Accepted: Pending
Major: Math for Berkeley, Math/Econ for UCLA
GPA: 3.43 (3.53 in prereqs)
Pre-Req’s: Finished Winter Quarter 2009
IGETC: I go to UCSD
EC’s: All math ec’s conceivable
Essay: 8/10. (10/10 on content 6/10 on writing style). I wrote about eveything I have done for my major and what i plan to do with it. Honestly, if i get in Berkeley it will be because I demonstrated more interest in my major than all the other applicants applying for my major.
Other: Have taken 4 upper div math courses (with my lowest grade being a B). SO i think that gives me an advantage over other ccc applicants.

I don’t think I stand a great chance at Berk because my extremely low gpa, but if i get in, it will definitely be due to Essays/ECs

Switch with me cr!

Math Economics FTW
