Official 2010 Boston College Waitlist Thread

Rye 890
how'd you come with your number of 15-25?

just a guess.

on the first letter we received it said in past years 50-300 had been taken off and on this second letter it just gave me the impression that it was even less than 50.

but who knows...

A friend of my daughter's is waitlisted and got a call that kids are being taken off the waitlist at the end of June. I think he got a call as both of his parents went to BC.

Okay, seems like a lot of conflicting information. Here's my information:

We called the BC Undergraduate Admissions Office about ten days ago. They said feel free to keep calling back for updated information, but that they were not planning on doing anything about accepting students off the wait list until, possibly, maybe, last week, being the week starting Monday, May 15th (remember this is ten days ago we called), but more likely something would happen this coming week, May 22d and following.

To say they won't take anyone off the wait list until "end of June," is inconsistent with the BC wait-list-letter that said they "promise" to have the wait list situation resolved by no later than June 15th. Could it had been misunderstood and what the person meant to say was "end of May"? That would make more sense.

We presently have at least three students from this one private school in the Midwest still on BC's wait list. Nobody has received a letter, call, or anything.

Now, this is speculation, but remember there was some talk in this thread, above, that sounded credible, about BC being very careful not to over-enroll in their first waive of acceptances. It seems to me that fact, if correct, could cut both ways.

One way is that since they accepted fewer applicants, they would have more openings after May 1st and, therefore go "deeper" into the 1,500 wait-listed applicats. That assumes they have the same or larger May 1st no-responses or May 1st declines of its offer to admit as in past years. Unfortunately, I think BC understands that over the last few years they have been sending out too many acceptances. Otherwise, why would they care about over-enrolling? They wouldn't. So, they must know they are getting an ever increasing number of applicants accepting their acceptance, pre-May 1st.

That thought brings us to another way to interpret the fact is that they were careful not to over-enroll for a reason, i.e., they feel confident in their statistical analysis of the number they predict will accept; so, they can pretty much fill the class with fewer offers, but, maybe, a better selected group who will be more likely to accept BC's invitation by May 1st. Therefore, they won't need to go very deep into the wait list, if at all.

So, bottom line, is we don't know anything from that information about how many will be taken off the wait list. One person speculated above there would be at most 25-30. More on that below, but it's just that, a guess. It means nothing.

Also, someone said they think that anyone who is accepted off the wait list knows they have been accepted by now. How do we know this? Does anyone at all know anyone at all that has been accepted off the BC wait list at this point? I don't.

Finally, the college entrance books like Fisk and the like suggest that people that apply to BC also apply to the Ivy Leagues and Tufts. I know for a fact that Harvard and several other Ivys started accepting applicants off their wait lists last week. This is just me, but it seems that BC may just sit tight and see if how much attrition occurs from their pre-May 1st admits before they do anything at all with their wait list. That would make sense to me.

Also speculation by me is that, the fact BC hasn't accepted anyone off the wait list yet---at least that we here on this board know anything about---suggests BC does have only a few spots to fill. I wasn't saying the poster above was wrong about 25-30. In my opinion, that may be a pretty good guess. I hope not.

Otherwise, why wouldn't they say something like, "oh, we have, currently, 32 openings. Let's take 30 applicants off the wait list." The fact they haven't said that suggests they have little or no room to be selecting anyone off the wait list at this point.

Bleak. But, again, this wait list business is by nature bleak. We can take hope in the notion we really don't know anything at all for sure.

My contribution to the rumor mill:

S is admitted for 2010. In a contact with admissions prior to May 1, the ad counselor estimated that the class would be in place by the end of May. I have not seen the wait list letter, but this seems somewhat consistent with BillOGoods's info.

FWIW: S's school is sending about twice as many kids to BC this fall as it usually does. Typical year: 8-9 admitted, 2-3 attending. 2006: 15 admitted, 6 attending. I have heard nothing about WL'ed students, just a few rejections.

Although my interest level is nothing compared with those of you on the WL, I am curious to see what happens. I'd love to see some come off, as it indicates they didn't overenroll.

Good luck. I hope you get good news soon.

amdgmom: You could do us all a great service by conducting some reconnaissance. Since S is admitted already, the admissions counselor won't be reluctant to take your call and give you a straight scoop.

If you're going to be calling anyway about something, ask him/her when, and if, they will be accepting anyone off the wait list, how many, and when they think it will be wraped up. May also ask if they are seeing a lot of "attrition" off the current acceptances in the class that are deciding to go elsewhere, like Ivys.

Just received my rejection letter. It's actually a relief since I'm already set for Fairfield in the fall. Choosing between the two schools would've been a pain for me. Best of luck to everyone else!

just a question does anyone know anyone who got off of the waitlist? i am pessimistic bc 9 kids already committed but that isn't unusual from my school (a jesuit hs)

My d received her BC waitlist rejection letter. It's no big deal since she's all set going to Villanova. Even if BC admitted her, she's so happy and excited about Villanova that I don't think she'd accept. Good Luck to all. Did anyone get off the BC waitlist???

momsworried - heeeey! me and your D have the same situation, first choice BC but enrolled at villanova! i havnt gotten my waitlist decision back but im really excited for villanova so i don't care as much as i thought i would.

Erin from NY--- Actually, Villanova was my D's first choice. She stayed on the waitlist "just in case". It might be a good sign that you haven't received your waitlist letter yet. Maybe that means you're accepted! I know plenty on Villanova's waitlist who would gladly take your spot if you go to BC. Good luck to all in the BC class of 2010. Erin, if you decided to remain a Wildcat, I'm sure you'll be happy. It's a great school too!

D1 is set and ready to go to Conn Coll....unless she gets off the waitlists at BC and Nova...What a long process...we applied early to both...got deferred, sent out 6 other apps and received rejection from Tufts, acceptance to College of Charleston, URichmond, Conn Coll, Stonehill, Fairfield...and 2 WL...I think a simple Yes or No would have sufficed?????!!!!!!

nicole1500-- Conn College is a great choice. I know many of my friends children who loved it! College of Chaleston, URichmond are also great choices with URichmond receiving my vote. (A little far from Mass. though) Of course I think Fairfield is great since it is my alma mater. I couldn't get my D to even think about it since we live in Connecticut about 35 minutes away. My D was deferred early at BC and Villanova also. Since Villanova was her first choice, she wrote to them all the time with current accomplishments and how Nova was her first choice etc. I think it helped. She is ranked 5/272 with a GPA unweighted of 3.92 but.... horrible SAT's. That definitely hurt her at BC along with 6 acceptances at her school already. Have you found out about Nova's waitlist? Are they taking anyone off? I agree with you. A simple Yes or No makes life easier. Good luck to your D at Conn College.

thanks momsworried...my D1 needs a peptalk, she just didn't feel a "fit" on accepted student day with the other kids...shw loved the tour and the rep who came to her school...she is from a small private school, class of 40...and 4 of her friends got in to BC, 2 to Villanova with no intention of attending...I lived in Stonington Borough for 8 years as a kid...and i like that area...URichmond was a VERY close second to Conn Coll... Both schools treated my kid with respect///we just never made it back down there to revisit!!! Two hours door to door is a dream come true...
We never even visited Fairfield or College of Charleston, she just applied on her own free will (which she has plenty of!) Have not heard about nova waitlist yet, have heard BC rejections are trickling out last week and this week...D1 LOVED the campus, studies and kids at Nova...oh well, not meant to be...I loved UPenn, that is where I want to go!!!!

erinfromny and momsworried .. im in that exact situation too!! waitlist at bc and enrolled at nova, and not even sure how bad i want to go to bc anymore eve nthough it was one of my top choices cause im really excited for nova

haha how ironic that i just posted that cause it looks like im def not going to bc. not to burst anyones bubble, but i feel like i should relay any information i get.. i just called bc and they told me that they werent accepting anyone off the waitlist. i asked "no one?" and the lady said, "correct. zero." sorry. just telling you guys

I just got off the phone with the admissions office - the woman told me that the denial letters have already gone out, and that there ARE acceptances that will be notified "shortly". She informed me that everyone will know by the end of this week. Please feel free to call yourselves... obviously I was told something different than babydollxo... be sure to post what you find out ~

My D's waitlist rejection letter said NO ONE was being taken off the waitlist. Could be that they are playing games with everyone. Babydollxo, you can find me on the Villanova threads. Are you officially going to Nova? Have you done your housing, facebook, laptop program, health forms, language placement etc.? My D has done most of it except the meal plan. Talk to you soon. Good Luck 2010 BCer's

Has anyone got any "new" news? Any letters? Any correspondence w/the admissions office?

Yes, received a letter this week saying that the BC class of 2010 was full and they weren't taking anyone else off the waitlist.
