The problem is that the acceptances, rejections and waitlists have been all over the board and do not fit into a real pattern. I am beginning to think that the college has tiers of accepted candidates and that is why the stats seem so random.

one theory that my college counselor has: there are a group of people who read each and every one of our applications, right? assuming that their decisions aren't governed by a superior (i can't confirm this, if anyone can please tell me), then they are free to decide the fates of each student in their batch. so lets say that admiss. officer A receives 200 (or however amount) applications to read. almost all of the applications he receives are top-caliber students- 2100+ sat's, 4.0 gpa's, etc. if he doesnt correspond to his fellow officers on the high-quality nature of his applicants (again assuming a lot) then he is forced to only admit the decided-upon amount of students, and the rest of the very qualified applicants must take a number on the waitlist. lets say admiss. officer B receives the same amount of applicants, but the quality of his are poorer. he then admits the best of his batch, mediocre as they may be. the rest, who are not qualified for admission, are mostly rejected.

again this assumes A LOT,
but if this sort of scenario exists, then it might help to explain why so many of the seemingly well-qualified kids on this thread are waitlisted.

p.s. i am also pretty sure this applies to large, competitive state schools like ucla
