@ogeni2000: Seems like we’re in the same shoes. I submitted my TOEFL results late in March to UT Austin and haven’t heard from them yet. I applied to 6 schools, with 2 rejects, 1 admit without funding and 1 offered me a MS though I applied for a PhD. It’s really competitive out there, so don’t feel upset with yourself.

Everything’s in
Comp Sci
Accepted: SUNY-Buffalo (MS), RIT(MS), Syracuse(MS), UPenn(MS), Penn State (PhD)

Rejected: Stanford (MS)

I just call UT Austin. For Civil Engineering department, they are still making decision till March 31, this Wed. Everybody should know their results by that time.
I’m crossing my fingers and hope now.

Applied for a PhD in Aerospace Engineering
My BS is in Mechanical Engineering

Georgia Tech…Accepted
University of Maryland…Accepted
University of Illinois…Accepted
Princeton…Rejected

I will be going to the University of Illinois starting in Fall 2010!

I got accepted to UT Austin at the last min, I think i 'm the last one in the department got accepted. I call them in the afternoon of last wed and they tell me they just send me an email. That was extremely great. Good luck to every one

School: Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK)
GPA: 9.9/10
Major: Electrical Engineering

Research Experience:
- Summer research at IITK after sophomore year on theoretical bounds on BER performance
- Summer research at Clemson University, SC on mobility models
- B.Tech. thesis on channel estimation and data detection

Applied in CSE to work in AI as I love psychology and wanted to work in an interdisciplinary field. That did hurt my chances a bit though :(

Applied schools:
MIT - Reject (on 2nd March)
Stanford - Reject (on 20th Feb)
Berkeley - Reject (on 15th Feb)
Caltech - Reject (on 31st March)
UIUC - Reject (on 31st March)
UMich - Accept (with funding)
UCSD - Accept (with funding)
UT Austin - Accept (with funding)
Clemson University - Accept (with funding)

Currently torn between UMich and UCSD…

^ seeker153 congrats on your success

if you dont mind this question- what visa did you use to actually do research at clemson. I am asking because I want to do research overseas and it has been a bit of a problem since i am an unedergrad. And the US is way more difficult than other countries

@safego:Thanks! As for my Clemson internship, I got a J1 visa and I was an undergrad myself when I went their (after my junior year)… The thing is if you get the relevant documents from the university, it’s very easy to get the visa (my interview was hardly 2 min)…

@thread:
A queer thing happened, I got an email from UIUC today (7th April) telling me that I am being offered admission with funding and that previous rejection was a mistake! Had no clue such things happen…

Hey that makes sense- thnxs a lot

U shuld call UIUC or email them to make sure too about ur stuff- it does happen but like its a 1 in a million type of situation. I have always wished it happened to me though, that my rejections will turn into successful stuff

^glad i could be of help…

I don’t think I will go to UIUC now… I have already narrowed my choices down to UCSD and UMich, though I am confused between the two!

I think it should be more than 1 in a million type of situation.
I had the same experience with Drexel. I got an email from them yesterday applogizing for their earlier rejection notice which, according to them, was a mistake.
Things happen!

USC – Waiting, applied in April 2010.

Can anyone give me advice on some of these schools I’m applying to for Materials Eng (MS/PhD) next spring??

Applying to:
Stanford (MS only)
Northwestern
GaTech
Michigan
Columbia
UPenn
Duke
USC
Florida

I graduate in December. Stats below:
+3.2 cum gpa, 3.5 major gpa from GaTech in Materials Engineering (strong upward trend)
+Very involved in research (2 years), have presented at 5 prestigious research conferences and working on pub
+Did an internship at the largest chemical company in the world also.
+550Verb, 750Quant
+Great LORs, all from top professors

Here is MY story (as the title of my thread suggest, I am a little bewildered by my admission results, but even more infuriated):

I am both a EE and Mathematic Major who applied to EE Phd Programs at MIT, Caltech, Princeton, Harvard, and Cornell. I am also a U.S. citizen (I noticed sometimes people ask this question in the thread).

GRE Scores: Math - 800
Verbal - 570
Writing - 5.0

GPAs: College GPA: 3.845
EE Major GPA: 3.85

TA Experience: Only Undergraduate TA in the EE department. TA for Digital Logic one semester and Electromagnetics the current semester.

RA Experience: Currently a Research Assistant investigating integrate photonics and optical super-resolution (began this past December).

Work Experience: Two seperate Co-ops completed the past two years. One for a large defense contractor.

High School Valedictorian of a class which exceeded 600 students.

Results:

MIT - Reject
Caltech - Reject
Princeton - Reject
Harvard - Reject
Cornell - Pending (But at this point I would be wait listed at best…and all funding is most likely obsolete).

I just don’t know what else someone can do lol…that’s why it seems like all this grad school stuff is hokum. They look for students to fit a certain criteria, and I most certainly do not. I’m a male from Texas, whose dealt with incredulous academic shortcomings since highschool. So for anyone else who deserved to get into a school or two, you are in good company.

wow. sorry man. Maybe you should have applied to more schools though. i am pretty sure. A lot of applicants have the same stats as u do at those schools

GradHokum, I’m sorry to hear about your disappointing results. You sound like an excellent student. From a quick glance, it looks like your only weakness is the the research area; these days, PhD programs expect applicants to have tons of research experience starting sophomore year, at the latest, or, if not applying directly out of undergraduate, post-bac research lasting at least a year.

Given your excellent stats and obvious talent for the material, I urge you to try again next year with some more experience behind you. Talk to your current profs to see what they suggest you do to strengthen it and what kind of experience you need. I think you’ll have much better results next time around.

GradHokumn,
You should have definitely applied to more schools! You can look at my stats on page 1 and they compare to yours. I also got rejected at MIT, Stanford, Harvard (?).

Their criteria these days is ridiculous and well, you are competing with the smartest people in the world to get into any of these schools (Only 100 combined engineers got accepted to MIT for EE and CS this year which means that in comp. arch. there was only about 10 admissions)

Harvard and Princeton are Ivy League and they don’t have big engineering departments thats why I think their acceptance rate is low.

CMU, UMich, UT Austin, Cornell, GA TECH, etc are just as good as any of the top three schools!!! Ok, maybe not as good but you will get an awesome education no matter what.

Hello, I am currently a second semester freshman at RPI and I have a 3.5 GPA from the first semester and will have about the same from this semester. I am wondering if I manage to keep around this GPA and become involved in research what top Masters programs for structural engineering I would be able to get into.

Thank you,
CivilRabbitt
