Official 2010 MIT RD Decision Thread

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[]Fee Waiver Used?: No
[]SAT I (by section): 760M, 750V, 740W,
[]SAT IIs: 790 Physics, 740 Bio M, 730 Chem, 760 MIIC
[]ACT: N/A
[]APs: Hum. Geo, Computer Science A, AB, Latin III and IV, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics C, Biology, English Lang, English Lit, US History...
[]IBs: N/A
[]GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: No clue, 3.9ish
[]Rank: 168/954 (~18%)
[]Senior Yr Courseload: AP Calculus BC, AP Computer Science AB, AP English Language, AP Biology, AP Physics C, AP Latin
[]Number of Apps from Your School: 10ish? Maybe a bit more. 4 that I know of made it.
[li]Other stats: NM Finalist, nominations for various competitions and research programs.[/ul]
[/li]

Subjective:[ul]
[]ECs listed on app: Robotics competitions (US BEST, FIRST), research internship, self-education, science competitions...
[]Job/Work Experience: Worked 3-3.5 years concurrently with high school in an accounting office. Started a small graphic design business. Worked in my mother's office...
[]Essays (subject and responses): I spent six months writing them... one was about chance, seizing what you want, and natural curiosity... I told them my favorite activity to engage in was shenannigans. Wrote an optional essay about the work in my research internship.
[]Teacher Recs: My Latin teacher is a Harvard/Brown alum, and told me she spent four hours writing my letter of recommendation... she's a very dedicated woman, and I know she loves me because I'm her only student ever to skip a year of Latin... My biology teacher didn't tell me much, but I know she loves me too... her only words were "if you don't get in, they didn't read my letter."
[]Counselor Rec: Couldn't have been too good. I'm in graduating class of 954, but I do have a very friendly relationship with my counselor. I'd venture to say it's more personal than most, which may not be as good as letters from other kids at smaller schools, but likely stood out a bit coming from my ginormous high school.
[]Interview (feel and general location): I was his first interview of the year, and I came in researched. We talked about his experiences at MIT and what I liked to do. He asked me for my grades/ranks/SAT scores, but it didn't phase him. I think he liked that I was very entrepreneurial and obviously did my homework. It was at his house.
[li]Hook (if any): I don't know that I have much of a hook beyond anything that's been mentioned above. I did have a research internship, which no doubt helped.[/ul]
[/li]

Location/Person:[ul]
[]State or Country: TX
[]School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): I go to a public senior high school which has 2000 11th and 12th grade students. 954 in the senior class. We send a lot of students to good schools, but I don't know whether that's because we're really good or there's so many of us some are bound to get into good places.
[]Ethnicity: Middle-Eastern (Turkish)
[]Income Bracket: Was upper-middle class when I applied, but my father has lost his job since then (the company he was working for filed for bankruptcy, damn telecom).
[]Gender: Male
[]Hooks: Same as above...
[]Strengths/Weaknesses: Personal character. I'm just so darned lovable. :). I've worked a lot for my own education... advancing years in classes and getting cool stuff done. My weak points are obviously my GPA/rank, which is obviously low. I guess I just had enough stuff to overpower it. That and nice mid-year grades...
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I poured my soul out into my main essay. I worked on it for so long... And I have very good relationships with all my teachers. I think the subjective part just really outweighed the objective part of my application... MIT really isn't based on a formula, and if anyone says otherwise I will kindly come over and give you a boot to the head. :).
[]Other Factors: I had a lot of emotional support. This didn't directly affect me getting in, but it really helps to have people believing in you while you're writing your essays and filling out your application.
[]General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congrats to everyone who made it. Condolences for everyone who didn't... I hope everything works out for everyone.[/ul]

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 650M 660CR 590W and 650M 620CR 640W
[] SAT IIs: 800 - Math II, 750 - Biology M, 700 - US History
[] GPA: 4.26W 3.83UW
[] Rank: 2/480
[] Other stats: None
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: These probably made me standout. The primary one was about how my trip to Lahore, Pakistan changed my perspective and compelled me to research pollution and eventually collaborate with others in experimentation. My short essay on my intended major discussed BioE, but I sent in a supplement which asked to change the declaration to MechE. The intended major essays discussed my interest in learning how things work and how attending MIT would best allow me to harness my curiosity to yeild marketable solutions to major problems. The second small essay (on what I do for fun) was on my intense curiosity and the degree to which I delight in tinkering with mechanisms.
[] Teacher Recs: These must have been instrumental in my acceptance. One was from a Physiology teacher from the local JC, who wrote about my curiosity and love for learning the how and the why behind everything. Another was from an AP Psychology teacher who discussed my love for learning (while indirectly describing my wit). The last, and possibly most important was from a Chemistry teacher from the local JC who actually taught at MIT (the Bio dept.). She mentioned how I would fit in and how my curiosity and application of learning make me truly unique.
[] Counselor Rec: This was probably average. Though the counselor described, to the best of his ability, my advanced courseload, his recommendation didn't really distinguish me from the rest.
[] Hook (if any): I've written a research paper on The Effects of Slow-Rotation Spinning on Memory and Learning. Also, I've done a couple of years of research on alternative energy solutions, particularly hydrogen power. Lastly, I mentioned my having filed for thirteen patents. I think I got in because I emphasized my innovativeness and genuine love for learning.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Bangalore, India, though I'm a domestic applicant. I transfered to Bangalore for my senior year and attended a school in California for the other three years of high school.
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Pakistani/Indian Asian)
[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: Primarily researching and inventing, though I was also a part of my high school's winning Botball Robotics team. I also had a job as a web-designer/assistant for an auto company. Additionally, I founded a badminton club.
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: Though my standardized scores were far below the averages, I still managed to make it in. Though my described hooks and recommendations were very helpful, I don't think they are the reason I gained admission. I, personally, think it was my sincere prayers. I really didn't think I would make the cut. There must have been some divine intervention. Either that or someone hacked onto the server and changed my reject to an accept ;).
[] Other thoughts: I truly feel for those who were rejected. In fact, I sort of wonder whether I deserve my acceptance. In any event, I'm elated, to say the least! Congratulations to the other accepted students, I look forward to meeting you guys next year!
[/ul]

Oh well, to tell the truth, I really expected an acceptance, but the bottom line is there are SOOO many overly-qualified applicants that I shouldn't really feel depressed about it. But I still am. :(
Oh well, MIT Grad school maybe????

Congratulations to those who got in! Please keep in mind how lucky you are to be able to attend such an awesome school! Take advantage of EVERYTHING MIT throws at you in honor of those rejected! :)

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] Fee Waiver Used?: No
[] SAT I (by section): 800M/740V/720W
[] SAT IIs: 800 IIC, 790 US Hist, 710 Chemistry
[] APs: I've taken Statistics, European History, English Composition, Psychology, Chemistry, and US History and averaged 4.67 on them. Taking 7 more this year, including Physics B and Calculus BC.
[] IBs: None.
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 4.57 weighted. All A's.
[] Rank: 1/500
[] Senior Yr Courseload: All AP. Physics, English Lit, Calc BC, Macro and Micro Economics, US Government, Comp Government
[] Number of Apps from Your School: 2, including myself.
[] Other stats: 224 PSAT.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: mostly math team, mentoring, and some other stuff. ECs were my biggest weakness.
[] Job/Work Experience: Lots of work over past two years. I've been working at the same bookstore for nearly a year now.
[] Essays (subject and responses): Don't remember. I thought they were mediocre.
[] Teacher Recs: Excellent.
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent.
[] Interview (feel and general location): Awesome. I felt like we really hit it off.
[] Hook (if any): None really. I had some state level recognition in math competitions, but that's not very remarkable for an MIT applicant.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Florida
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Large Public. Approximately 25% go on to a college. 10% go to 4-year universities.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Income Bracket: Too high to get good financial aid and too low to be able to afford MIT.
[] Gender: Female
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: I felt like average ECs really hurt me. But on the upside, all of my ECs were focused around mathematics whether it be competitions, volunteer tutoring, coaching middle school math teams, etc.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I have no idea. I felt like I had strong statistics and grades but didn't have any activities or achievements that would make me stand out from the crowd. I feel very lucky (except I don't believe in luck). Fortunate. I am very fortunate.
[/ul]
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I pretty much gave up hope after I was deferred in the early round, so I'm completely shocked. Now I just have to figure out to pay for it...

rejected, don't feel like posting stats again, but at least now i can be added to their percentage of valedictorians that they reject...whoopee

HEy squiggle88 me too! But there are still place left and things to do.

slak- that's true. mit wasn't my first choice anyway, though it still stings. i'm sure we'll get into awesome places! good luck!
Ummm... how do you turn HTML on?
lowofo, you have to leave out the blanks. They are just in there to show you the HTML tags without actually activating the formatting.

Congrats to everyone who got in. For everone else, I'm sure you'll end up someplace awesome.

Decision: Pwn3d (deferred, then rejected)

Stats:[ul]

[] APs: 5 x 11 (Calc BC, Comp Sci AB, Stats, World History, US History, Euro History, English Language, Physics B, Physics C Mechanics & E/M, Chem)
[] IBs: Nope
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 97.2 UW
[] Rank: 1/330 UW, with by far the hardest courseload
[] Senior Yr Courseload: Not bad, with 7 APs and an online differential equations class.
[] Number of Apps from Your School: Just me, AFAIK
[] Other stats: 132.5/5 AMC-12/AIME; did reasonably well in the chemistry olympiad last year
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Science Olympiad, several math teams, started my own math team, violin, summer research thing (Intel STS Semifinalist)
[] Job/Work Experience: aforementioned research
[] Essays (subject and responses): I wrote about getting pwned on a game show and stuff like that. I thought it was pretty good, but I guess MIT doesn't think so.
[] Teacher Recs: Both of them were probably very good, and one might have been spectactacular, but I didn't read them.
[] Counselor Rec: Not sure, as my counselor probably had to write like 50 of them (just an estimate).
[] Interview (feel and general location): This was at my house. It was supposed to last 1 hour, but it ended up taking a little over 2 hours. I talked a lot about my interest in science and research and stuff. I thought it was pretty good, except I slipped in a couple areas and said that I sucked at things like writing.
[] Hook (if any): research, STS, several decent math/science-related leadership positions, took calc in 9th grade?
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NY (western NY)
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): public; not many people applying to elite schools this year
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese) :(
[] Income Bracket: probably upper middle class
[] Gender: male
[] Hooks: You asked for this above.
[] Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: I'm pretty strong in math, physics, and chemistry, and I guess my academic stuff is pretty good.
Weaknesses: Unfortunately, I don't do other stuff, like sports.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Lack of well-roundedness, stereotypical boring Asian male.
[/ul]
Other Factors: Nah
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I guess I'm kinda annoyed; I actually thought I had a good chance. Oh well. Congratulations to the people who got in, though. Caltech is the bee's knees!

if they reject the high sat and gpa people, who do they take?

Excel: my GPA was low... they take the best matches. Grades and SATs are a part of that, but if your personal character doesn't fit... you won't make it. (It is important to note that there are many who do fit, and don't make it, but that's simply because there are so many applicants.)

is it just me or does it seem like lots of the stronger candidates got rejected while many "weak" ones seemed to have gotten in....
