[] Other thoughts: Officially shocked. Sent in my application two or three days before deadline, DECIDED to apply a week before. Asked all my teachers last minute and counselors, didn't get to have an interview, reused essays... BUT SO HAPPEH because MIT became my first first first choice around late January.. and I thought I would never make it in because it was so rushed. And you CAN make it in to college with B's and with a horrible SAT retake record.[/ul]

[*] Other thoughts: This was a refreshing suprise.

lol. I have an identical twin too, but she didn't apply. She is going to Stanford and I'm probably going to MIT or Harvard. We will be in different coasts for the first time ever in our lives. Did your twin get in?

In an effort to dispel nervous energy, the (entirely statistically useless) exit poll stats so far (out of 74 total posts with the required info included):

Applicants were 72% male and 28% female, which looks roughly right considering past years. However, just based on this thread, there is a 54% acceptance rate, 41% rejection rate, and 5% waitlisted rate. Hm, oh well. :} 45% of males were accepted, vs. 76% females (in actual stats, it looks like the acceptance rates are usually more along the lines of 11% / 25%).

So this tells us pretty much nothing. Unless MIT lied about their 13% acceptance rate. XD

they received about 11000 applications and around 1500 got accepted. so ~13%. Girls and minorities have a higher acceptance rate because MIT embraces diversity.

[] Gender: Male
[/ul]Other Factors:[list]
[] Extracurriculars: Community service at church, water polo, swimming, research internship, camps, some others but im way too excited to think of them or type them all out
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: I was deferred early but DAMN!!!! IM SO HAPPY!!!! ITS A DREAM COME TRUE! I really wasn't expecting this...7 people applied in my school and I'm the only one who got in! I know people who read this probably don't think i deserve this because of my GPA but you have to understand my school doesn't weight and it's arguably the best in florida, which means true competitiveness. In addition I had a great rec from an MIT alum, a great rec from the head of school who has taken a particular interest in me, and a bit of water polo help in the recruiting department..I guess thats my hook.
[] Other thoughts: I am really sorry looking at these stats of so many people who were rejected, you all are truly amazing. Just because you are not going to MIT doesn't mean you can't get what you want done! You clearly are brilliant in class and on standardized tests! No matter where you spend your next four years you will continue to excel and have opportunities to better our society and world.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Honestly keep thinking it's a massive fluke. But it will be so cool to spend the next 4 years in the USA (gets me out of cold and wet England, so I'm not complaining).
But now I gotta go tell Cambridge I've got a better offer, lol.

Hey Brian_MC, while browsing an old nature journal I read the abstract of some guys who built basically the same device, except they used a pyroelectric crystal to generate the potential difference. I guess the advantages are its cheaper (lithium tantalate is used in everything) and you dont have that nasty problem of having to deal with thousands of volts of electricity. After I read the abstract I thought it would be a great thing for my high school to do, but alas Im a lazy good for nothing senior with no initiative. Oh well, there is always college. But I thought you might be interested (though you have probably already heard about it). Sorry about MIT, if you didn't get in, thats definitely saying something about the school. Cheer up, cause where there's a will there's a way
