Good luck!

I was waiting for someone to create this thread.

Applying to UCLA, UCSD, and UCB as a political science major.

Current School: UC Riverside

GPA: 3.84

Pre-reqs: 3/4 (finishing fourth by spring quarter); English Completed; Math Not Completed (Will complete by spring)

UC to UC reciprocity

EC: Honors Progam, Student Body, Volunteer at Church

Awards: Dean’s List every quarter, Deans Academic Distinction Award

@curious - i dunno man, i think the fact that u have no ECs might hurt you. also, your gpa is kinda low? but i dunno the avg. gpa lol.
@kobeftw - i think you have a 80%chance at UCSD, a 50%chance at UCLA, and a 30% chance at cal
good luck both of yoouu!

Yeah, its not looking good for you, @curi0us. The average admitted GPA for Psychology was 3.78, and the average applied GPA was 3.38.

Lack of any ECs, lack of TAP, and low GPA will hurt. Do you, by chance, have a strong upward trend? If you had a 2.0 your first year, transferred, and had a 4.0 since (my situation, actually, so I’m a bit biased) you may have a shot.

Bottom line, it won’t be impossible to get in, especially if you write an absolutely killer essay, but don’t put all your eggs in the Bruin basket.

my turn:

Applying to: UCB,UCD,UCSC
GPA:3.81
Pre-reqs: Completed by spring
IGETC: Completed by spring
EC’s: None
Personal Statement: 5/10.
Other: URM (if that means anything) and one W in a non pre-req/igetc course.

edit: Can’t TAG because I won’t have IGETC completed 'till spring.

@christian612

What major?

Are you sure you can’t TAG into Davis or UCSC? I haven’t heard of having to complete all of IGETC by the Fall prior to transfer.

Applying To: UCLA - Sociology, UC Berkeley - Political Science

Current School: CCC

GPA: 3.5 (first year. Will go up by the end of spring)

Pre-reqs: UCLA - 1/3 (will complete all by end of spring)

IGETC will be completed by Spring 2011. No TAP/TAG (not offered at my CC)

EC: Honors Progam, Student Government, YMCA volunteer tutor, document translator for law firm (pro bono), Phi Theta Kappa president, Criminal Justice Association secretary

Awards: Campus involvement scholarship

First-Generation college student.

:)

kobeftw

For a UC student transfering to UCLA, you’re chances look good.

Your gpa is outstanding. You just might be a shoe-in for UCSD. Not so sure about UCLA and CalBerk tho. More extracurriculars should help :)

@CURI0US

With a GPA like yours, ECs will help a lot. Im not so sure about your chances. Quite frankly, I think they’re quite slim, but they’re there.

@nick: Poli-sci

People here have stated that IGETC is needed to TAG

oh jeez. i did a chance thread a couple of weeks ago, but i figure i’ll get some more responses from a targeted chance thread.

CC APPLICANT
WANTS: UCI, UCLA, UCD
MAJOR: English
GPA: 3.76 (guesstimate by end fall: 3.86)
PRE-REQS: complete by '11
IGETC: certified by ‘11
ECs: tutoring, volunteering at various libraries (though my most recent stint is this summer-fall), mentoring/helping youths in writing - except not from like, a valid organization. more a on-my-own-time thing. does that still count?
PS: doin’ my best!
OTHER: here’s a cookie? never mind - i want it. & no TAG at UCI, 'cause AP creds are a bust.

gracias, muchachos!~

@simplistical

Your chances at Irvine and Davis appear to be pretty good. You got a great GPA, and an IGETC which is good.

That whole on-your-own tutoring thing might be more of a blessing than you think. You can stretch the truth and say you started your own one-man mentoring program. And that will look nice on the ECs part.

@christian612

You should be set for UCSC and Davis, with a very good shot at Berkeley. Try and get some ECs.

You do need IGETC to TAG, but the normal deadline to complete it is July of the year you enter the UC. For instance, on the main UC application, you check the IGETC box, but your CCC only certifies you the following July (or before–that’s the deadline).

Some TAG programs may require IGETC by the end of Fall, like they require the English and Math courses by the end of Fall, but I’m not aware of any that do. I know San Diego doesn’t.

Figure I’ll post mine… I’m a little unique.

Schools
UCLA (TAGing into UCSD)

Major
Political Science

Current School
CCC

GPA/Academic History
Cumulative, 3.37.

Fall 2006-Fall 2007 was at a small, unknown LAC that almost lost it’s accreditation last year. 2.0 with 27 units, unknown how many will transfer. Most courses don’t have direct parallels at UCs. Cumulative GPA assumes all 27 units will be judged transferrable.

Fall 2007-Spring 2009 was part time at a CCC, 15 units total, 3.8 GPA (4 A’s, 1 B). Also working during this period.

Fall 2009-Fall 2010: Full time, including 23 units between January and June 2010. 46 transferrable units, 4.0 GPA. Cumulative GPA assumes 4.0 GPA in Fall 2010, which I expect.

Spring 2011: No transferrable courses. I will potentially (depending on the LAC courses) have 88 transferrable units after Fall 2010; 90 or more makes me ineligible for San Diego.

Prerequisites
All 4, all A’s.

IGETC completed by end of Fall 2010. Will be TAP-certified.

EC/Soft factors
Provided tutoring in various subjects, as requested by other students. Honors program (TAP).

Current intern for state assemblyman (both he and his COS are UCLA graduates). Staff-level experience on four political campaigns, volunteer-level experience on three more. Former governmental staff member to an elected official with two million constituents. Have given on-record, published statements to area newspapers involving the governmental office.

Essays
Strong. I’ve got some good experiences to write about, and I’m going to make sure my essays are well-written.

My comments
I’m an interesting case. Low overall GPA, but with a very sharp upward trend and TAP. High level of major-related work experience. Thoughts?

I wasn’t very specific with mine when I started my thread. Here are my stats:

Schools
UCLA - top choice, UCSD, UCSB, SDSU, USC, UCD

Major
Psychology

Current School
CC

Overall GPA
3.26

GPAs
Fall '08 - 3.44 (16 units)
Spring '09 - 3.77(13 units
Summer '09 - 4.00 (just one class)(3 units)
Fall '09 - 2.64(11 units)
Spring '10 - 2.82(11 units)
Summer '10 - in progress(3 units)
Fall '10 - nothing yet
Spring '11 - nothing yet

Have a W in my record, got a D in a math class, but retook that class and got a C. Total: 1 W, 1 D, 3 Cs.

These are the classes required for Psychology (B.A.)
General Psychology - B

Math (Calculus or Stats) - B in stats, not behavioral statistics. (I can still take behavioral stats and get an A in that course)

Life Science (Biology) - B

Philosophy - C , will be taking another philosophy course to compensate for that C.

Chemistry or Physics - Have not taken that yet.(plan to get an A)

done with IGETC. TAP certified by next spring. Need one more class to finish all prerequisites.

Extracurriculars: Honors program, IDEAS club, some community service

First Generation to attend college in my family. Have taken many classes in the subject of psychology.

Also does anyone know any other schools in LA, should I choose another major instead or what would be a good alternate major.

ouch kidkrasher i dont think you have a chance for UCLA, like at all. deffs tag wherever you can. also, im not sure about USC but i would also have to say thats a no-go.

Sorry to burst your bubble kidkrasher, but I’m going to have to agree with redoplease on this one. You should definitely apply everywhere you can though, some people have gotten lucky. Add UCI to your list, you can make a TAG as long as you have the first english and math, along with a 3.0 GPA. you don’t even need to finish any major prep courses in orderbto transfer. You should definitely have it as safety school because TAP doesn’t guarantee admission. If you look around the forum, there are people with 3.7+ who got denied even with TAP.

Applying to:(In Order of where I want to go) UCLA, UCB, UCI, UCSD, UCSB

Major: Psychology

Current School: CCC

GPA: Currently 3.64 (I had a 3.93 till I got 1 C in a film class this summer) - Should have a 3.8 by Fall

Pre-reqs: Completed by Fall for UCLA, Spring for B

EC: EOPS Honors Program, Completed the STP program at UCLA which supposedly has some pull.

Essays: Hopefully will be amazing, the STP people help us write them

Hooks: First gen, low income ect…

No Tap, Any shot or should I apply as Antho instead for UCLA. I can complete all the pre reqs by Spring.

Awards: Presidents List, Deans list.
