Essay: It’s going to be epic. I’m going to write about my early struggle with math, how it almost led me to drop out to join the military, and my subsequent overcoming of it :]
Misc: First generation college student, Mexican-American

So I started at my CC back in Fall of 06 as a psych major. After completing my prereqs for that major, I decided psych was definitely not for me. I entered a very troubling period, one which I was unsure of my future, experimenting with anthro until I decided that wasn’t for me either. I had failed math miserably a few times (remedial courses, elementary algebra), preventing me from getting anything done. After deciding that I want to be a doctor to the point of obsession, my determination increased 10 fold and I basically kicked ass in all my classes including math. Despite finishing up my IGETC by this semester, I would only have around 3 prereqs done for the Human bio/health sci major by next spring! After speaking with a UCSC rep today, she said I will get admission for sure, but she’s not sure about entrance into the major. I really, really, really, really, REALLY don’t want to stay at my CC for a sixth year to finish prereqs…even looking at that sentence on my screen depresses me. What chance will I have at getting into that major? If I am granted admission but not the human bio major, can i choose a different major (i.e. neuroscience, chem)?

Applying to: SDSU (first choice), CSUN, SJSU for Fall 2011.

Major: Linguistics

Current School: CCC (De Anza College; in area applicant for SJSU)

GPA: 3.7 currently (after this term a 3.75 at least)

Pre-reqs: Done for SDSU, CSUN, SJSU

GE: Will complete CSU GE certification after fall 10.

Extras: Phi Theta Kappa member, Dean’s list for the past 4 quarters

Only thing that I could see that could burn me is that I’m an out-of-area applicant for SDSU. Any recommendations for colleges that would give me aid and have a decent linguistics program with TESOL classes are welcome.

@Pinoiako916 & SMCguy Been avoiding the UCs for two reasons. One, the cost. I’m planning to be a EFL teacher (strike one for repaying loans) abroad. So don’t want to have too much money to pay back and have to switch the currency to US dollars and losing its value depending on the state of the economies. Two, most of the requirements for linguistics for UCs require two languages with one language studied for two years in college and the other for one year; one would have to be a European language and another a non-indo European language. I have one year of Korean. The second year at my college was cut because of budget cuts. I can’t stomach to learn European languages (I’ve tried French) except perhaps my heritage language of Swedish but no college offers classes so I’m stuck with not being able to fill the pre-reqs for linguistics majors at UCs.
