*Official* 2011 transfer chance!

Nick, I think youre in. Most those classes probably wont transfer. If they do they might just transfer the credits. I know people that work in admissions at UCLA and I went to an OOS uni and I had them evaluate them and they gave me credits for them but no grades. So maybe you’ll be the same. Plus you have a very strong up-ward trend.

hey guys the GPA that I posted is my CC gpa. I went redid my calculations according to the UC system and I have a 3.31, still not as high but what other schools can I get into. That’s just what I have right now. It will increase with these summer grades and the upcoming two semesters.

KidKrasher, Tag into I,SD,SB ect…

@ella89

I hope you’re right! We’ll know in 8 months.

As for you… There’s no way you can do TAP? The big advantage in your case would be the option to indicate a second-choice major.

Even without TAP, you’ve still got a shot. The holistic review process would, I think, consider the reasons for a slightly low GPA. I don’t think they’d view a C in a goofy film class nearly as negatively as a C in a psychology class. With a 3.8 by fall, you should be in good shape.

Applying: UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCI
MAJOR: Philosophy
GPA: 3.4
PRE-REQS: complete by Fall '10
IGETC: certified by Spring '11
ECs: Volunteer work, Coaching, work etc…
TAP Certified

Chances please??? :)

@la4ever09

TAG unto UCSD, UCI, and UCSB. As for UCLA… Its a tossup. TAP will help, but you’re significantly below the average admitted GPA for psychology. Do you have an upward trend? Any major-related ECs? What are your grades for the prereqs?

Make sure you write an absolutely killer essay.

i’m applying for philosophy, not psychology…lol.

Heh, looks like I still had Ella89 in my head. As a philosophy major, you should be in good shape. You’re a bit below the average accepted GPA, but not hugely so. That’s where TAP will help you big time. As for ECs, try to get a leadership position in your CCC’s philosophy club. If you don’t have one, start it.

Applying to UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCI, UCD, UCR, and maybe USC (though I’m not sure if I would want to pay for private school tuition)
Transferring From: CCC
GPA: 3.5 UC transfer GPA
Major: Philosophy
EC’s: none, thinking about maybe joining a club or something for my last year, not sure if it would really help at all.
IGETC: will be complete by spring
Pre-reqs: varies a lot from school to school. For Berkeley 0/3 because none are offered at my CCC, for UCLA, the one that is offered will be done, UCSD none are offered at my CCC, UCI will have most done, but it says for philosophy pre-reqs don’t have to be completed before transferring, UCD 1/3 of the classes my CCC offers, and UCR 1/2 will be done. As far as general classes for my major I have 2 specific philosophy classes completed.
TAG: will TAG to UCSD, UCD, and UCR (cant TAG to UCI because of new requirements.)

Wow - either I’m missing something here, or this new generation of CC’ers is a negative one. Don’t count someone out with a low GPA if they have TAP for UCLA. TAP usually IS regarded as a “guarantee.” What gives it that air of assurance of admission is the alternate major…so long as you’re not a moron about it. Absolutely no impacted majors for TAP alternate (sociology, history, econ, political science, etc) and make sure you have your pre-reqs for the alternate completed as well.

You’ll likely get into the school, just not with the major you opted for. Unless the major you want is INCREDIBLY UBER-IMPACTED (Econ and the like) - chances are you might be able to switch into a major once you’re at the school - contact the department you’re interested in and find out.

Geez you guys, get in the game and dip up the old posts. Those denied with TAP made certain “mistakes” - no alternate major (not necessarily a mistake, but that’s what TAP is all about; alternate majors), absolutely no impacted majors as an alternate, finish the pre-reqs for both primary AND alternate majors (don’t just blindly follow assist.org - go to UCLA’s site and look up the major pre-reqs; some aren’t listed/articulated at your CC)

Good luck you guys.

@PerfectSky

TAP? You’re in line with the average accepted GPA for philosophy. TAP, good essays, and EC involvement would likely seal the deal for UCLA. You’re obviously golden for the UCs you can tag into, and should have a decent shot at USC. As for Cal, they don’t publish detailed information on accepted GPAs for each major, but I’d guess its in the 3.6-3.7 range, giving you a shot at getting in.

@Levonid

I’m in a tough spot as a Political Science major. Simply, there aren’t any other majors that are a good match for me, since you can’t list an impacted major as an alternate. This rules out English, History, Economics, Communications, Sociology–all the alternate majors I’d really consider. The only two left are Philosophy and American Literature and Culture.

Honestly, I’m considering not listing an alternate major, because I’d turn down either of those anyway. You can’t switch into Political Science after being admitted under another major. I’m not sure how UCLA considers the alternate major. I wouldn’t want them to look at my application and say, “Well, he’s borderline for Political Science, but he put down American Lit, so we’ll take him there,” rather than, “He’s borderline for Political Science, but he doesn’t have an alternate major, so we’ll take him anyway.”

I suppose that’s a good question: Does UCLA only look at the alternate major after an applicant has already been rejected from the first choice, or do they see both at once, leaving open the possibility that what I described above could happen?

@nick_scheu

I believe they decide upon the fate of your primary before moving onto your alternate. However, I’m not an adcom so I really can’t say anything with any certainty.

However, I highly suggest you put down an alternate major. You can try to switch at orientation/find out if you can at all. Can’t switch into Political Science, try English, History, etc (definitely not Econ or Comm though). If switching is not possible, look into the option of double-majoring. Should be easier, especially if you’ve already completed the pre-reqs of the major you want to double in. Just giving you an avenue to look into.

Or, if not for anything else, put down an alternate just to see “Congratulations on your acceptance to UCLA” on your screen haha

Good point. If I get accepted to UCLA as an American Lit major, I could tell people I was accepted to UCLA, but I rejected them in favor of UCSD’s superior Political Science program. Haha.

By the way, Levonid, would you care to chance me? My stats are on the top of page 2 of this thread.

My comments
Although my GPA is decent, it is still a little below the Average Admitted for my major. I will be TAP certified though, so I’m hoping that makes up for it. All my EC’s have to do with my major. Perhaps the only thing I see being rejected for is my B’s in calculus classes. What do you guys think?

I think you’re in good shape. You never know for sure at LA and Berkeley, but you’ve got a decent shot.

@AAW000:

You are like i was. Looks good for you. I got in biz econ this year @UCLA. I also got into Cal as Econ, if that helps.

i was also an econ tutor at my CCC & helped out with 1st graders at elementary school 1 day a week. I had about the same GPA as you. I worked at as an office helper at financial planning office.

i think i have some legit reasons explaining why i earned some C’s two summers ago. regarding the F, pretty much depended on other ppl who i thought wouldn’t flake on me.dunno if that would help myself at all. long story short, i understood 90% of the material so retaking it this fall is going to be a breeze.

essays, havent done yet but heard ucsd doesnt pay attention to those.
