*Official* 2011 transfer chance!

I’m thinking of applying to UCLA for fall 2011. I currently only have 22 units under my belt will be taking 18 in the fall and hope to take 3 in winter and 15(or 18) in spring and maybe one summer class.
After I graduated from HS I got admittd to UCSD, UCD, UOP, and UCSB. I was going to go to UCSD but decided I wasn’t ready to move away (thus I only took 4 classes in the fall b/c I couldnt get into anything else).
As for ECs I’m super active on my CCC’s debate team.
As of now I have 3.7 GPA, which might drop to a 3.6 (summer classes).
I’d apply as a religious studies major so there aren’t really any pre reqs. I’ll have IGETC done by summer. Do you think I have any chance at UCLA?

School: ucla
major: business econ
gpa: 3.48 by fall 2010 (estimating)
major prep gpa: 3.68 by fall 2010 (estimating)
Igetc: will be completed by spring
Tap: will be completed
EC: honors transfer club, alpha gamma sigma (honor society), mattel internship, employed at mcdonalds, help manage/coach a 6th grade girls club basketball team, helped coached at a basketball camp, volunteer help at a basketball rec league for kids, locks of love volunteer, peer leader at my church
Essay: can’t say all I know is that I put my best effort into it

Plz be honest (brutal if you have to). I know my gpa is not the highest tha I’ve have read in other posts but I hope my ec’s will make up for that. Also, do recommendation count a lot in admissions because I know a lot of ucla alumni who would be willing to write me a letter?

Sorry, I don’t think you have a chance, elcowarrior. Biz econ is one of the most impacted majors, with an overall average admitted GPA of 3.95. Your major prep GPA doesn’t match that.

Maybe if you have an incredible upward trend and an amazing essay you can get in, but I think UCLA is a super reach at this point. UCLA doesn’t accept letters of recommendation (no UC does).

@Elco How hard is it to work at McDonald’s? I always wanted to give it a shot.

A friend of mine is an engineer (a manager of some sort now) for Northrop, and he always talks about how, on a whim, he included his time working at McDonalds on his resume. Apparently it got a lot of attention.

He was a manager there, quickly promoted, so I’m sure that has something to do with it.

If it’s clear you have the education to do a job, having a “menial” job like McDonalds on your resume would likely be pretty valuable. Working in fast food doesn’t require any education or extensive training, but that doesn’t mean it’s an easy job. Time-management, interpersonal communication skills, leadership, and crisis management can play a role in working in fast food. It may center on something relatively unimportant, but the principles are the same.

Heck, if you spent six months working at a McDonalds, just think of the awesome personal statement you could write.

when you guys state that you have completed the pre-requisites, does that mean that you have completed all the required and recommended courses?

yupyup. well. the prereqs, in my case, are expected to be done by spring, except for one - if i get screwed and can’t get in the class. but yeah - essentially, when we’re done with prereqs it’s either 1) by fall 2) by spring. prereqs usually means the major’s courses; most people list the prereqs of IGETC separately in their stats.

Applying to: UCSD, UCD, UCLA, UCB

Major: Biology

GPA: 3.86

All prereqs will be done by end of spring.

No TAP.

EC’s: Hospital volunteer, biology club, homeless shelter, student lab assistant.

@nick: really?? My counselor at my ccc told me it was 3.70. Also as far as my upward trend I have been getting mostly A’s/B’s. If I get a total 4.0 next semester will it help? Btw on a side note, the actual gpa was supposed to be a 3.57 but due to some complications regarding a class that I took while I was in high school, I still have that grade calculated in my transcript. Also, is economics less impacted than bus econ?

@investment: workin at mcds is like any other job…it’s what you make out of it. I have cool co-workers which make the job less stressful. The work prepares you to multi-task under stressful situationsc sometimes with an under-staffed team. Just stay positive, put your best effort, and be willing to work in different situations. Because of this mindset, I have already received more hours than my co-workers within two weeks of my employment, and I’m only a part-time worker. It’s decent pay but it sure feels good to have money in your pocket.

Yeah:

Business Economics’s average admitted GPA was 3.94 in 2010. A 4.0 semester will help, but I doubt it will help enough.

Ok thanks for the info. Most likely I’ll change my major to just regular econ because I have a higher major gpa. As far as upward trend goes, if i stayed another year as full time student and get almost all A’s do u think that will help during fall 2012 admissions?

Of course. But remember that, in a 15 unit semester, 4 A’s and 1 B is already a 3.8 GPA. I’d really work focus on getting the 4.0.

Do any non-impacted majors interest you? TAP and nearly any non-impacted major is just about a sure thing. If you could list one as your alternate choice, it might not be a bad idea.

@elcowarrior
I do not suggest u to do this, I also got into UCLA’s Biz Econ with a GPA 3.9 when applied but leave with a 3.89. My friend did not get into his first choice major Biz Econ with a GPA 3.82 but get into Anthropology. Community college transfer is all base on GPA and major pre completeness. additionally, your major pre GPA have to have all A’s for UCB and UCLA in order to get in a such impact major in UCLA. Another frd of mine did the same thing as you mention that stay anohter year in college because he want to go to USC and UCLA but he got rejected by both. So he stay another year and get all A’s on the classes they took last year. HOwever, he get rejected again… kinda waste of time.
My suggestion is to consider other UC such as UCD UCSD or UCI they both have a pretty good econ program

Additionally, the admit rate for Econ and Biz Econ are almost identical because they are both impact major in UCLA. THe only difference is the two accounting class that Biz Econ requirement for its major. Changing to regular Econ wont help u much, i should said will be no affect…

@nick: well there is mathematics/economics. It’s not impacted but the only problem is I would need to take three more math classes. I can take probably one next spring but I’m not sure if they’ll admit being that im still missing two pre-reqs. What do you think?

@bule: thanks for the info I’ll most likely apply to another school as you mentioned

@elcowarrior
you can consider take the two math classes over the summer, just make sure you passed them.

@bule: but don’t you need all classes done by spring?

I’d have to do some research, but I think some of the UCs allow you to take required classes the summer immediately prior to transfer. I am pretty sure UCLA and Berkeley don’t.

How set are you on UCLA? One option would be to apply now, and keep working on completing required courses and boosting your GPA. If you don’t get in, apply again next year, with a higher GPA thanks to the two semesters of extra work on your record.

The trouble with taking required classes in the Spring or Summer of the same year you transfer is that those grades can’t be considered in the admissions decision. That’s why UCLA recommends having as many prerequisites complete at the time of application as possible (i.e., by the end of fall a year prior to transfer).

^ i can see the spring grades not being calculated/being of any significance to decisions, but do UCs still consider prereqs being complete, even if the last few courses are by the spring prior to transfer?

@nick: I am very determined to go to ucla. I just talked to a counselor at my ccc and he said that ucla does not require me to take all my pre-reqs before applying as long as most of them are done. Even though one of the math courses will be taken next spring I can at least get credit for 5/7 pre-reqs, despite the grade not being seen on the admissions. With my TAP and ec’s (and the fact that it’s a non-impacted major) I think I have a much better chance of getting admitted. But like you said, worse case scenario, I’ll stay another year and finish all my pre-reqs for fall 2012. Thanks for the advice.

There’s a difference between requirements and whether or not you’ll get in. A student with a 3.0 GPA from high school satisfies the GPA requirement to apply to UCLA, but that doesn’t mean he or she is getting in.

Here’s last year’s thread showing who was accepted and rejected from the UCs, showing only those with an Econ-related major. Note how few acceptances there were for UCLA.
