*Official* 2011 transfer chance!

Bumping from previous page

San Diego Miramar College

Transfer: Hoping for either UCSD or UCSB, but I’ll also be applying to UCI, UCLA (w/o TAP), UCB, maybe UCSC

GPA:
• Current (most recent classes from this years summer school): 3.57 , Deans List (for what its worth)
• Conservative estimate after this Fall semester: 3.50

Major: Mechanical Engineering

IGETC: Will be completed at the end of spring

Prereqs: Will have 1 missing

EC: Continuing 2 year internship at a Fortune 500 company; First year was related to major, second year (aka what im currently doing) is semi-related.

thanks

Anonymousity, can you TAG to UCSB for Mech. Eng.? I just saw Mech. Eng at UCSD is an impacted major and UCLA avg. admitted GPA last year was 3.89. I would say UCLA would be a longshot.

@SMCGuy: Are you doing TAP? I think you have a good shot at UCLA, narrow but you can still make it. GPA admitted was 3.56 so if you can get a 4.0 this semester and make your non-traditional background work for you, you would stand a chance.

Transfer: Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD

GPA: 3.8125
Major GPA: 4.0

Major: Political Science

IGETC: Already completed

Prereqs: Everything completed (I took a summer session course at Cal to satisfy a requirement that is not offered at any CCC and got an A)

EC: Pretty weak…

I am concencered about my EC. I’ll try to do something and I hope my essay will stand out… somehow.

@melocotones
You are pretty much in for UCLA although I am not sure about Berkeley’s avg. GPA, but you should be good.

@nero: I never read or heard anything about UCSB having mech eng impacted and what not, so I’m assuming you can tag if you meet the requirements. And yeah UCLA is a reach, but better some shot than no shot at all. And it was never really my primary school anyway so I won’t be bummed if I get rejected by them. My primary goals are UCSD and UCSB.

Oh I am sorry, not UCSB but UCSD is impacted.

Hey guys…

My Stats:

Transfer to: UCLA, UCSD or UCI

Cumulative GPA: 4.0

Major GPA: 4.0

Major: Psychobiology (UCLA), Human Biology (UCSD) or Biology (UCI)

Pre-Requisites: Will complete all pre-requisite classes for all of the majors listed above by Spring 2011 except one physics class

IGETC: Will be completed by Spring 2011

ECs: Decent, but nothing over the top

Essays: Should be pretty good

My Questions:

-Is it a guarantee or lock that I will get into UCLA for Psychobiology? If not, chance me.

-What is the likelyhood that I will be invited to compete for the Regents Scholarship, or other academic scholarships, at any, or all, of the above colleges?

Thank you all in advance for your input and please let me know if you need more information or details in regards to any of the topics above.

@Tony - You’re in. If you maintain your GPA it is very likely that you will be contacted about Regents. As far as other academic scholarships go, I am not completely sure, but there are many merit-based scholarships that LA puts out there. You have to dig a little, too.

One thing, UCLA is strict about having all pre-reqs done by the Spring semester before you transfer. It could cost you your admission so try squeezing that req in somewhere. Is there a reason you can’t finish it by Spring?

Yeah that prerequisite could make or break your chances. If you can get your prerequisites done you’re pretty much guaranteed in but otherwise, it’s hard to say. If you can’t take it because your CC doesn’t offer that class then you will probably be alright.

Here I go:
I want to transfer to: UCB! UCLA is my second choice and I’m tagging UCD or SD I’m still undecided.

Major: History
Cumulative GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0

Pre-Requisites: I have completed all of my pre-reqs except 1 at UCB as my school has not offered the course in a while, by next spring they should offer it and I should have it completed.

IGETC: All buy my life science is finished in Fall 2010, life science will be done in Spring 2011

ECs:
Habitat for Humanity 1-2 times per month since March
Sporadically volunteer for Democratic Party
Started a club that unfortunately failed as our advisor left
Peace Club (like one meeting a week)

Work:
5 hours per week at an elementary school (March to Present)
25 hours a week last year ending Feb 2010 due to surgery

Essays: I’m a decent writer so I assume they will be of good quality

I’m mostly wondering if b/c I started my ECs so late if that will hurt my chances or not. I was thinking about noting that I couldn’t do them prior due to my heavy workload but then after my surgery it made me re prioritize. Any help to sort this out is much appreciated.

Major: Management Science
Schools: Berkeley and UCSD

Major: Quant Econ or Business Info Sci
School: UCI

GPA: 3.43

Major pre-reqs: Entirely finished by Spring.
IGETC: Done.
TAG: Tagging to UCI and UCSD.

@edelynly and @rikizle: Thank for your replies and input.

My main problems are time and scheduling. So far I have completed all three of the required gen chem classes, one of the 3 required bio classes, calc 1 and 2, the first semester of a two semester sequence in physics and most of IGETC. All in all I have completed 59 units with the 4.0 in tact.

My Schedule:
Fall 2010: O-Chem 1, 2nd of 3 bio classes (genetics/molecular), and Korean 1

Winter 2011: Statistics

Spring 2011: O-Chem 2, 3rd of 3 bio classes, and Communications 1

Not completing 2nd of 2 physics classes

My Dilemma:

Winter 2011 is what is killing me. If I could take O-Chem 2, the 3rd bio class or the 2nd physics course in the winter I would jump all over the opportunity and this would allow me to complete all of the pre-reqs by time of transfer. The problem is that my CCC does not offer any of those classes during the winter and since they are part of a sequence taking them at another CCC is out of the question.

Let me know your thoughts and thank you again for the input

EC’s: Intern for a college website (writer), in a few clubs, Volunteer art gallery manager at school, and volunteer work at an elderly care home, working in the Marketing and Public Relations department at my school

My #1 choice is Cal, so mainly chance me on that one. And yes, I actually am interested in American Studies as my major, originally it was going to apply under Media Studies but since it is “capped,” I’ll go for my 2nd choice.

Also, I need some tips on the personal statements.

Thanks, all!

@iceosmunda
based on the informatino u provided above, u basically in for all the UC u mentioned above including UCB and UCLA even with the lack of EC. Just keep ur 4.0. I got in a very competitive major in UCLA and UCB with a GPA 3.9. My advise is make sure u complete ur major pre and keep up ur GPA

@GPAMAN
as i mentioned from the last chancer, you r in as well. well, always aim high! get some decent EC and write a good easy will increase your chance. Good luck

Please chance me.

@difanchen

haas is REALLY competitive, to the point where waiting to take a major pre req in the spring may hurt your chance of getting admitted. if you can take it this fall, i suggest you do it.

@mytime

not sure if american studies is impacted, but your gpa is better than average so just try to get past that 3.7 mark. writing a killer personal statement would also drastically improve your chances. if your community college’s honors program is part of berkeley’s TAP program, you’re almost a shoe in.

Applying To: UC BERKELEY (1st choice), UCLA

Current School: CCC

GPA: 3.6 (but will hopefully be a 3.7 by the end of this semester.)

MAJOR: Development Studies (UCB) and International Development Studies (UCLA)

Awards/TAP: Outstanding Student in Political Science Award; Dean’s List for 2 semesters; not TAP certified, but was in the TAP program in 2006

NOTE: BUT I’ve had academic renewal, and have 12 W’s on my transcript!!! (This is from 2 years ago) I know W’s supposed don’t matter, but my GPA isn’t that great either. I’m retaking 5 courses I got W’s in and may retake more of them next semester. I was already accepted into UCLA back in '07 as a Poli-Sci major, so I’m not too worried about LA. My main concern is getting into CAL.

@cherryv - why didnt you go to LA back in 07 then j/w? but if you can write some amazing essays out of those ECs, then i think you have a very good shot at CAL. also, i think you will get into ucla once again. try your hardest for a 4.0 this fall!!

Applying To: Berkeley (my fav), UCLA, UCSD (TAG)

Current School: CCC

GPA: 3.81

Major: Political Science

Pre-reqs: Everything finished including the requirement, that can only be taken at Berkeley
Pre-req: 4.0

IGETC: Done, I am taking electives like Art history right now

EC/work experience: Part-time job and volunteer for disabled people, exchange year in Japan

Awards: Deans List for three semester… and scholarship in French

Essay: I am going to make a diversity statement ;).

I know political science is pretty impacted, so I am kind of worried about my EC.
