My overall advice to transfer students is definetly work on your and make them count. My grades were ok, but I am positive that it was my essays that got me in. I really spent a lot of time like the whole summer planning out my essays, editing and drafting and such. I really made them count and really did my research on why I wanted to attend Cornell and how it would help me achieve my goals. Oh yeah, and if you can also visit the school you want to transfer to beforehand, it really makes a difference cause they do note who you are and your interest in your school, and it’ll also give you a better feeling if you really want to be at the college.

But my essays were amazing (good writer) and I called literally EVERYDAY and I asked questions so much to the point the admissions counselor for transfer students knew me when I showed up for the Transfer preview program. I also submitted everything required on Sept 1st (the day the application went live). And I don’t know what happened to them, but I also sent a tin of chocolate chip cookies to the Admissions Office :).

Comments:

As you can see, I do not have hundreds of extracurricular activities. I think what’s important is how actively you are involved; do you hold any positions? did you come up with a special idea that perhaps got your club to start a new project? I see some students writing down hundreds of ecs on their applications, but I think pure number doesn’t mean much.

Also your essay needs to show that you have a clear goal of what you want to achieve, and how the school you’re applying to can help you with that. Be SPECIFIC about it. Just saying that “your school provides an excellent education in my intended field” is not going to leave much impression on admission committee. Also, your essay needs to be polished and sophisticated(absolutely no grammar errors) but don’t be obsessed with using all those fancy SAT words.
