***Official 2012 Siemens Competition Thread***

I worked on vaccine development. I believe I listed as biochemistry. How about you?

If my registration number was in the 8000s, does that mean a lot of people entered this year? Isn’t the normal number of applicants in the high 1000s?

I researched disease pathogenesis. The subject matter is technically biochem, but my methods of research were more genetic, so I listed as Genetics. Hopefully it should be clear to the judges. Unfortunately, one of my data images didn’t come out as clear in the printed version than what it looked like on my computer.

@tastypoodle. I doubt the number would go up from 1500-2000 applicants a year to 8000+applicants. I’m guessing it’ll be a typical year around 1500.

Anyone know if they choose exactly 300 semi’s and 60RFs? I think the numbers varied a little last year…

Worked on using an allotrope of carbon to deliver drugs to only cancer cells that were caused by HPV

Sounds like you guys did some cool projects(:
And I’m not really sure Hadiram, maybe it would make sense in some scenarios to pick slightly over 300, if for example they already have 299 and accept a group project of 3? Or is the 300 based on projects? In that case, I’m not sure :O

@Tasty: Yeah, I had a really high registration number also, but I doubt it has to do with the number of applicants.

the other thing about siemens is that they choose semi’s and RFs on a regional basis, unlike other competitions like intel sts. so regions like the ones including california and new york will be especially competitive. where is everyone from? im in the midwest (region3 i think)

Got mine submitted last Wednesday! So good to finally send it out. Stayed up past midnight three nights straight working on it.

Hey guys, just wondering, approx. what time is the regional finalists/semifinalists list put up during the day on oct 19? morning? afternoon? evening?

Sounds like a good time to browse previous years’ threads xD

They posted it at like 2:00 last year. Just to make sure it doesn’t disrupt school ;)

I feel like whether it be 2 AM or PM it would disrupt school in some way LOL, which is it?

I think its 2PM, during the middle of school

Guess I’ll be refreshing the page the entire school day LOL

I found some more details about last year’s competition:

“According to the foundation, an all-time record of 2,436 students entered the 2011-2012 competition and 1,541 projects were submitted.”

And “Across the nation, 317 students were named semifinalists. This number was then narrowed down to 96 regional finalists comprised of students from 21 states.”

ah so it seems like they choose fewer than 300 projects for semifinalists because of all the two and three person teams

According to [Siemens Competition - Judging Process | College Board](<a href=“Search for Scholarships – BigFuture | College Board”>Search for Scholarships – BigFuture | College Board), they choose “up to 300 outstanding projects” as semifinalists.

Hi, would someone be willing to explain to me this whole process?

SIEMENS sounds like a pretty interesting competition to get involved in but I have no idea how to get started. I’m in my junior year right now. How did you all find mentors and research projects?

I submitted my project 8 days ago. I’ll probably bring my laptop to school to check in between classes whether they sent the results, lol

I meant 2 pm lol sorry my school ends at 1:55 and it wasn’t up when I checked right after school but it was about 10 minutes later

so did you guys all do individual or team projects? mine was individual
