***Official 2013 Siemens Competition Thread***

It looks like every other year has had an official Siemens thread... so I thought I would start one :)

How is the process going for you all? Have you submitted yet?

Done, and submitted. Phew.

Ahh, Siemens. So nostalgic :")

I can’t submit :(

Not a senior yet lol

Done, and submitted as well. Are we supposed to get confirmation emails? (I don’t think we are) If not, who signed for you all’s package?

Submitting today… Does anyone know when results come out? Also, how many people make semis?

Done and submitted! Scheduled to arrive today.

The results come out on October 18 (a Friday) this year. I can’t remember what time of day it was, but I believe last year I found out some time between 5-7 PM EST.

About 300 people make semi-finalist, which last year was a little bit less than 30%… I think

Can we email Siemens to ensure our package has actually arrived?

I wish I was done with my project already so that I could do this. Oh well, Intel is for the kewl kidz anyway.

I read somewhere that the results will come out between 1 - 2pm on 10/18… regardless I am not going to be able to concentrate the whole day :)

If 300 people make semis, how many people make regional finals? Siemens gets ~1500 apps, right?

In which category did you submit your project? I did bio but I feel like a lot of people always have biology-related projects…

We’re supposed to wait until October 2nd or later to ask if they received our project, at least based on the automated message I got when I called Siemens. Idk, maybe email works too…

I didn’t see the results before 2 PM Pacific Standard Time. However, that could also be because I forgot my phone at home or something. I don’t really remember…

About 80 people made regional finals last year. (But keep in mind, some of these are team projects, so the actual project count might be lower)

I was going to do bio, but my interest is bioinformatics and couldn’t find a mentor who agreed to help me past the basics, so instead I did a computer science project. I’m not really fond of my project this year - I liked my last year’s project better.

How many of the 300 are group projects, is it 150-150, or what?

I think 300 people make semis, not 300 projects… so it would probably be ~100 individual participants and ~100 team projects

Yeah, I think 300 people are semifinalists, not projects. I didn’t really keep track of team vs individual…

@quidditchcat So, I called Siemens also to listen to the automated message. I believe they said we could call in for confirmation after October 3rd (darn, another day later!)

As for the semifinalists/finalists, from my understanding they pick ~300 semifinalists (~100 individual, ~100 team). For finalists, I believe they pick 10 projects per region, 5 individual and 5 team, for a total of 60 projects.

My project was biochemistry, which is another one of those big fields. I’m probably more interested in bioinformatics, personally, but I didn’t have enough background, time, or resources to pursue a bioinformatics project. So yeah, I stuck with some cancer research (you can’t go wrong with cancer!)

wait but aren’t there regional finalists? if you’re a semifinalist, isn’t that the end of the road for you in siemens?
