Comments: Essays got me through. Impress them with your writing, and be clear, concise, and mature. Do research on the school and write SPECIFIC essays. My college GPA is good, especially so since I took very challenging classes. I applied to only one school for a myriad of specific reasons, and it showed.

Current School: Maryland CC

Entering as: 3rd year of 5 (Junior minus a couple department specific courses), Aerospace Engineering

High School GPA: 3.8 UW

College GPA: Carnegie Mellon 2001-2004 ~1.675 @ 83 credits, 2011-2013 = 4.0 @ 70 credits, cumulative ~ 2.74

SAT/ACT Scores: 1360 (720M 640V, no writing section in 2001), only took it once as it was good enough at the time to get me where I wanted.

SAT II Scores: don’t remember, decent physics and math, horrible writing and bio

Significant ECs:
old ones - student senate (academic affairs chair - university wide moratorium policy passed, +/- grading nixing, joint funding committee ~1.2 million in student activities fees, kept student sex offenders off school’s judiciary council), habitat for humanity (worked on several sites over ~8 years), frank j. ruck scholar, fraternity buggy program (built composite racing vehicles), sexual assault advisor (at the time 1 of 2 males in the program, only greek member), research assistant (summer, presented), dorm desk attendant, enrollment services admin assistant.
new - stay at home parent, two part time jobs, phi theta kappa, aerospace club (until it died)

Applied to: University of Maryland College Park

Rejected: University of Maryland College Park (not a typo)

Likely Attending: University of Maryland College Park!

Comments: I doubt very much that you will find someone that screwed up as hard as I did for as long as I did because most people don’t have the money and most schools have better policies for kicking out immature students. Some highlights:
-11 D’s, 14 W’s (two full semesters of withdrawals plus a couple more), 2 F’s
-A single semester low of 0.67
-I spent more time logged into an MMO in each semester than all the time spent in class and doing homework.
Fast forward many years, I am a completely different person now.
You can read about the epic battle with admissions here –> http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-maryland-college-park/1489115-when-policy-goes-wrong.html

As much as I doubt you’ll find a bigger screw up, I doubt you’ll find someone who has swung back so extreme. It’s the main reason why I was chosen to give the valedictorian speech.

Comments: Before I decided to go back to school and pursue my passion, I organized all of the necessary documents and looked them over carefully. The first thing that came to my mind was, “Who the hell wants a student with this much baggage?” That kept me from returning to school for a long time. However, as I let my life story sink in, and I began to come into my own not only as a young father (I’m not twenty six), but also as a young adult, I knew that my story was one of perseverance. And I had to tell it. All I have ever wanted was to learn–to sit in a classroom with my peers and share ideas; to absorb ideas and concepts; to apply what I had learned in the class to the world around me. So I told my story. I let it be known that these struggles were all positive aspects of my life that, as one would see in a soppy movie, have created who I am today. I guess what I want to say to anyone who reads this is this: tell your story as only you can tell it. After all, the life you’ve led is what makes you unique. That’s what I think–and to an extent, know–admissions officers want to read.

Comments: I pretty much decided to go to the school that gave me the best financial aid and that was UCSD, surprisingly. The only advice I would give anyone is to CHECK ALL DEADLINES CONSTANTLY!
Comments: Great essays (everyone says that… trying not to be conceited but I write very well and the common app one was awesome). Great dean and HS Principal recommendations, and probably pretty good professor recommendations. Also probably very important: I didn’t ask for financial aid.

Comments: Essays were creative - wrote about the Brachistochrone curve (it’s a cool math thing, look it up!) and how the path I’ve taken is similar. During my junior and senior year of high school, I took all of my classes at the community college and was also in the Honors program at my CC. I earned an AS before my HS degree from the Honors Program, and all my EC’s / HS gpa actually came from the college.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions! :)

Current School: Grossmont / Cuyamaca Community College

US/Intl: US

Applied to: Bard College, University of San Diego (USD), Lewis & Clark College, Lawrence University, Skidmore College, and Whitman College
Accepted: Bard, USD, Lawrence, & Lewis & Clark
Waitlisted: Whitman
Rejected: Skidmore

Attending: No idea yet. I have to decide in the next two days. I just visited Bard and I loved it but my final decision has come down between USD and Bard.

Comments: I was very disappointed in Skidmore’s decision to reject me. I tried extremely hard to reach out to them. I interviewed, made a contact with the transfer coordinator, spoke with students on their S2S program, and visited an off-campus event 2 hours away from my home. All I can say is that I’m disappointed in the school. I think they rejected me because I applied for financial aid and it was very competitive this year. As for my other comments Bard and USD are amazing schools! I have to decide between the two and I’m having a difficult time because USD is in my home town, while Bard is so far away which somewhat scares me. If anyone has any comments/questions, please don’t hesitate to private message me or email me!
