*"Official" 2013 USABO*

@Mansu: I HIGHLY doubt it. They either:

 1. Look up a lot of biology resources online, use wikipedia, etc.
 2. Took an AP Bio course with a photographic memory.
 3. Study at home with a Campbell (or other) Biology Textbook and pretend that they only used Cliffs.

By the way, are you Korean? (Just curious)

Hehe, oldguy, I agree with you
I used to read every single post on the USABO 2012 thread, because I didnā€™t want to ask the same questions, lol

@MathGuy: by any chance do you have an AoPS? For some reason your username seems familiar to me

MathGuy777,
what makes you think i am Korean? I am very curiousā€¦

By the way, do you have USABO club at your school? How do you organize it?
There isinformal meeting with other bio maniacs at my school, and we have been holding discussion and open debate every time we finish a chapter in Campbell.

I already finished reading Campbell Biology book second timesā€¦Guess I will just focus on memorizing tables, graphs, charts, and any minor detail in Campbell Biology.

Are you guys also studying for Science Olympiad?

Iā€™m studying the best way to persuade my science teachers to re-start science olympiad. They mysteriously stopped in 2007, and I think itā€™s time to start it again. They didnā€™t do too well, but I think we could do better. I donā€™t think there are any bio-maniacs in my school and surely not a bio club.

^
No way! Science Olympiad is really a wonderful experience too. Studying for USABO greatly helps preparing for Life Science events in S.O.

My school has very few students interesting in biological careers; most of students want to be either computer engineers or chemical engineersā€¦I remembered one time I shouted biology is the center of science, and most of other students booing at meā€¦-_-

Is anyone utilizing Student Resource Center. I found most of the sites they offer helpful to assist my studying.

How many people do you need on a team to participate in Science Olympiad?
In my school, I only know of a few people interested lol.

And is the science olympiad similar to the science bowl?

Also how do you access the Student Resource Center? The link doesnā€™t work for me when I click on it.

Also, has registration already opened? I donā€™t see anything about it on the USABO website so Iā€™m not sure.

I think you need 15 people on the team for 25 events. I donā€™t think Science Olympiad is similar to Science bowl (assuming its like quiz bowl). You study specific topics for certain events such as Astronomy or Meteorology etc. Thereā€™s also build events where you build things to show the judges.

Do I have to memorize the labs (abstracts, procedures, and conclusions) listed in Campbell Biology?

Hey guys, I just discovered USABO a few days ago, so as a rising sophomore with very little bio experience (freshman bio class) but a lot of passion/interest for bio, do you think itā€™s plausible for me to start studying now, with the test being just a few months away? Would it be worth it or should I just wait for next year?

Start now! Even if you donā€™t do as well as you want to this year, youā€™ll have a head start on next year.

How much does the MIT OCW help? Iā€™m taking AP Bio but because the AP changed I know Iā€™m going to be lacking in the plant bio department. Btw, I know thereā€™s a book for this, Iā€™m just wondering about OCW.

Hey all,

In the spirit of free trade, I am offering all USABO exams that I have and some other resource material and links. If you have something I donā€™t, then I would like a copy of it in exchange, but itā€™s not necessary.

Donā€™t reply here. PM me your email addy, however it will have to be spaced out likeā€¦ crazymomster @ yahoo . com

I may not reply as quickly as you would hope howeverā€¦ but Iā€™ll get it to you.

I have a question for NSQ or anyone else with a strong biology background. My question is about centromeres. I am currently reading a book by Jonathan Wells, a proponent of ID, and yes, I do know what that entails especially from a ā€œMoony.ā€

He talks about centromeres and how they are, in his own words, ā€œan enigma because they show that a cell can impose an essential but heritable structure on its DNA that is independent of the nucleotide sequence.ā€ My question is if DNA determines the structure of our cellā€™s proteins, what determineā€™s characteristics (mostly position) of a cellā€™s centromeres?

Mansu: Well, I donā€™t think you are American, because it looks like English is not your first language (donā€™t worry, I have bad grammar too :P). You also seem very competitive and you live in Georgia. I would like to assume that you live in Atlanta (hotspot of Korean people) but haha, I donā€™t know.

^ Wow, sorry if that was really judgementalā€¦

@ilovedianaaggron: Haha yeah, I do; same username  Iā€™m guessing that you have an AoPS also? I ask a lot of questions and take classes on AoPS cause Iā€™m kind of horrible at math :P

^
Hahaha! When I acceess to CC, I usually type fast because I have many things to do.

Your name too is ironic; you said you are horrible in math, but you are MathGuy (no offense).

Hi, can you guys help me to answer this question from my teacherā€¦

There are various cell types in roots, and the cell type that is likely to produce secondary metabolites such as Atropine in Atropa belladonna is ā€¦
a. the parenchyma cell
b. collenchyma cell
c. sclerenchyma cell
d. vessel elements in Xylem
e. sieve-tube elements in phloem.

Thanks

Mansu: Soā€¦ You are? Or if you donā€™t want to say publicly, thatā€™s fine with me :stuck_out_tongue:
I understand, I do that all the time!

Yeahā€¦ I just picked this name cause I enjoy math (and biology obviously :))

How do you access the ecology chapters in raven 7th edition. Th website listed in the book is [Biology Of Plants: Raven, Evert and Eichorn](http://www.whfreeman.com/raven). But there is barely any text on the topics listed in the table of contents in the book. Can anyone who has accessed this before help me?

Is the 8th edition significantly more updated than the seventh edition?
