i would say usamo just because more people take it. but honestly both usabo and usamo are great if you can make it.

@kcanand111: I think its difficult to compare making usamo and making usabo camp, though usabo finals is technically the equivalent of mosp, so iād think that usabo finals may edge out in front of just making usamo. though again, its difficult to compare. iāve personally found it harder to make usabo camp than qualify for usamo, but then again thatās just my opinion based on my personal strengths and weaknesses

It seems to me that making USAMO (the exam, not the summer program) is more prestigious than making USABO Semis. However, qualifying for Camp in Bio is probably similar or slightly more prestigious than making USAMO. MOSP is a completely different level of difficulty though, likely on par with making IBO or even doing very well at IBO, simply because of the sheer level of competition that math has. Just my two cents.

what do you guys (past usabo finalists especially) think the cutoff will be

around 80%

I think being an USAMO semifinalist is far more prestigious than USABO semifinalist simply because you go through two rounds of testing to become an USAMO semifinalist. Anyone who has taken the AIME exam will know how tough it is. In fact in our school so far anyone who has qualified for AIME ( meaning you cleared AMC10/12) is almost guaranteed to go to Caltech but does anyone know where USABO semifinalists go?

Of course if you make camp in USABO then that is a definite hook for HYPS admissions.

Does anyone know how to rate the chemsitry olympiad in this context?

More people make āsemisā (the national round) in USNCO than USABO semis, but I donāt think one or the other is particularly more impressive, even for making the camp. However, USNCO may be inherently easier simply because the test format is better and the content is better defined (more understanding as opposed to memorization), so there is less chance of getting screwed by a particular test. If you know the concepts, then you should do equally fine on any USNCO test. If you know the stuff for USABO, well maybe CEE will throw in a bunch of taxonomy from ravenās or biochem not in campbellās and then youāre done for.

p.s. before people start ranting about how Iām disaffected or something, this is just my own two cents. I still appreciate both USABO and USNCO :)

what do you guys think is a good aime score for hyps

Definitely making high honors does mean something in UNSCO. Unfortunately USABO does not give us that break up.

Camp in either one does get you into MIT and depending on the rest of your application it will increase your chances for HYPS. Think about it, across four exams, 80 people make it to camp and there are over 6000 acceptances in HYPS - CM.

Do you guys think I have a good shot at Stanford. I am a usamo qualifier this year and at least a usabo semifinalist if not finalist and I have a 2270 sat (probably will retake) and I have taken 13 APs prior to senior year.

@kcanand - With all due respect for your credentials, this is the wrong thread for that topic. I think thereās a separate thread specifically dedicated to college chances that may be more conducive to your query.

Am I the only person who felt that hypothalamus (growth hormone releasing hormone, gonadotropin releasing hormone) was the answer for the first short answer question? (sorry if this is a repeat, I havenāt read the previous posts)

Yes :P

Uhh - I think most everyone put anterior pituitaryā¦ I guess hypothalamus could be a valid answer.

If I can remember correctly the question asked for two hormones and in that case it would seem like hypothalamus is a better answer, since the anterior pituitary would require hgh, lh, and fsh for a complete response.

^This was also why I put down hypothalamus and Iām wondering if thereās any reason hypothalamus would be wrong, but I canāt think of anything.

Is it possible for there to be two or more correct answers for the hormone question? I mean - I figured sheād be deficient in ALL anterior pituitary hormones (the question āwhat other symptomsā and hormonal therapy seemed redundant without it). I put HGH, LH, and FSH for the first part, then for other symptoms I put problems associated w/ ACTH and TSH deficiency, and for hormonal therapy I just listed all of the anterior pituitary hormones.

Hypothalamus seems like an equally good answer (if not a better one).

Oh - are you sure it said TWO hormones? I didnāt think it specifiedā¦

Well - there goes my score :P.

Okay - sorry for the repeated posts, but Iāve finally figured out what I did wrong. I didnāt put GH, FSH AND LH, I put GH and FSH OR LH. I figured that a deficiency in either FSH or LH would inhibit sexual maturation.

Well, if there arenāt any delays then finalists should be contacted in about 6 days.

I received a āSemifinalist Honorable Mentionā certificate. Does that mean that Iām out of the running, or is that simply a generic certificate given to all semifinalists?
